Bulldog Skin
Guided by Voices Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I played the part
I played the start
I made a table out of clay
I placed my hands upon the plans
I waited for a proud display
I played around
I heard the sound of certain trouble on the way
I got bulldog skin

I took a car
I drove it far
I dug the quality of steel
I crashed my nerve
I made it swerve
I made it back - was no big deal
I tasted blood
A date with scud
And now I don't know how to feel

I got bulldog skin
(Spark from the master)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Guided by Voices' song Bulldog Skin seem to talk about the singer taking risks, making things with his own hands, facing trouble and danger, and ultimately toughening up emotionally. In the first stanza, he talks about making a table out of clay and expecting a proud display, only to hear trouble coming his way. This suggests that the singer may have been excited about something, put in hard work for it, but things may not have turned out as he expected. He then talks about playing around and hearing certain trouble on the way, which could mean that the singer knows that he is going to face difficult situations but is not fazed by them.

In the second stanza, the singer talks about taking a car and driving it far, feeling the quality of steel, and crashing his nerve but making it back unscathed. He then mentions a date with scud and tasted blood, which can be interpreted as him facing danger head-on and coming out the other side stronger. This experience of facing his fears has led the singer to develop "bulldog skin," which symbolizes toughness and resilience. Overall, the lyrics suggest that the singer is someone who is not afraid to take risks, face challenges, and come out stronger and more resilient.

No, it's not possible. Experiments were conducted in the 1860's with the entirety of the Western scientific community participating. Hundreds of dignitaries gathered in the auditorium in New York where the evidence was to be presented. A young Hungarian scientist, Franz Lukacs, came close. It was something to see. He mounted the podium to a hushed audience. Esteemed scientists from the best universities and government institutes of research were present. However after a few licks, albeit with much admiration from the floor, the assembled fellows concluded that his formation of chords and riffs were off. Year after year the challenge went out to the best minds in Europe, but alas it was not to be. To this day, no one actually knows exactly how to shred in this way. Do not let it get you down, there have been many debates in the field of auditory science and beyond and the spirit of endeavor persists.
