Hardcore UFO's
Guided by Voices Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sitting out on your house
Watching hardcore ufo's
Drawing pictures, playing solos til ten

are you amplified to rock?
Are you hoping for a contact?
I'll be with you, without you, again
turn and run, the angel's calling
You say when and I say I'm falling
Up and down through broken down buildings
Back and forth but please don't bother at all

count the days that we have wasted from the start
Speak the words and build a playground
In your head

turn and run, the angel's calling
You say when and I say I'm falling
Up and down through broken down buildings

Back and forth but you know why I left you for so long
You know why I left you for so long...

Overall Meaning

The opening lines describing the scene of sitting outside and watching "hardcore UFO's" is immediately followed by two questions, "Are you amplified to rock?" and "Are you hoping for a contact?" These lyrics suggest a sense of anticipation, as if something incredible is about to happen. The next line is "I'll be with you, without you, again," which is somewhat cryptic, but it seems to suggest that the singer and the listener are both experiencing something together that they have experienced before, even if they are not physically together.

The chorus of "turn and run, the angel's calling / You say when and I say I'm falling / Up and down through broken down buildings / Back and forth but please don't bother at all" suggests a sense of chaos and confusion. The angel calling could represent an escape or a sense of being saved, but the other lyrics don't offer any clear explanation of what's happening. The final verse seems to acknowledge that time has been wasted, but the last two lines are particularly cryptic: "Back and forth but you know why I left you for so long / You know why I left you for so long..." It's unclear who is being addressed here and why the singer left them.

Overall, "Hardcore UFO's" is a enigmatic song that leaves much up to interpretation. The lyrics are full of cryptic phrases and suggest a sense of anticipation and confusion.

This song makes me want to cry from nostalgia... it's obviously a song about being a kid/teenager with tons of time to waste and the world at your fingertips. And then there's the little touch of an adult who didn't achieve what they thought they might. So sad and so beautiful.

jesus i never thought of this before but it makes all the lyrics fall in place

You start up this song and you're instantly blasted with those gloriously distorted guitar tones that almost sound dissonant against one another, but somehow shine harmoniously while that bass drum carries the waves of sound like a breeze of fresh, salty air. This is how a true album begins. This is the kind of album where you hear the first five seconds for the first time and know you're in for something special. The kind of song where it begins and you know you'll spend the rest of your years wishing you could experience hearing it for the very first time again.

I think this song was recorded 1993 or 1994, actually, Bob recorded in 1993 and 1994. And they released in album. Also the album cover only has two lines. In the vinyl, there was three lines. And also, the door in this background, is a wizard. He is standing out. And yes, it’s included in National Geographic book. But I need a name for the book.
