My Valuable Hunting Knife
Guided by Voices Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to start a new life
With my valuable hunting knife
She will shine like a new girl
And I want to shout out our love to the world (Hit it!)
Everything I think about I think about
Everything I talk about I talk about
With you
But you don't know what I go through
You don't know

Overall Meaning

"My Valuable Hunting Knife" by Guided by Voices is a song with a layered meaning, interlacing the concept of a valuable weapon with the idea of starting over in life with someone new. The lyrics open up with a wish to restart and create a fresh life experience. The hunting knife symbolizes a tool that the singer will use to cut ties with the past and start anew. The importance of the knife is emphasized by the adjective "valuable." He further states that the knife will shine like a new girl, here implying that the new beginning he craves is romantic in nature. The line "I want to shout out our love to the world" reinforce the idea that the singer is seeking a new and exciting love adventure. He has found someone with whom he wants to embrace the uncertainty and share it with the world.

The second verse introduces the theme of shared emotions and communication breakdown. The singer is looking for someone to connect with in everything he thinks and talks about. The line "But you don't know what I go through" suggests that there is a lack of understanding despite the search for a real connection. The line could be interpreted as a plea to the new companion to work hard towards understanding each other better and not assume that the knife signifies violence or negative emotions.

Good artists make songs about love and betrayal, great artists make songs about knives and objects.

I've been on a huge GBV binge during all this, they seem to be the only band right now I really have the motivation to listen to. These videos and films are much appreciated. Thanks as always Matador

This song/video has a vibe that Im in love with: the 90's aesthetics, the garage simple but powerful and raw sound, and also a mix of a wide variety of feelings like hope, misery, innocence and nostalgia...

@cashlinart

Thats a great way to put the feeling into words of what a lot of gbv makes you feel

@garethjones6168

I love that vibe

Guided By Voices is so underrated.

Are they really underrated, though? I think that the overwhelming majority of people in the world who WOULD like/love them DO like/love them. There may be small amount of people out there who just haven’t heard enough to get into them. But by and large, despite how catchy they are, they’re still a band with a very non-commercial aesthetic in most regards. Most of the great bands who came out of a place of true independence have maxed out their fan base size. That’s my take anyway.
