Guilllaume de Machaut was "the last great poet who was also a composer," in the words of the scholar Daniel Leech-Wilkinson. Well into the fifteenthth century, Machaut's poetry was greatly admired and imitated by other poets including Geoffrey Chaucer. Machaut is also the most celebrated composer of the 14th century; he composed in a wide range of styles and forms and his output was enormous. He was the most famous and historically significant representative of the musical movement known as the ars nova. Machaut was especially influential in the development of the motet and the secular song (particularly the formes fixes, the lai, virelai, and ballade). Machaut wrote the Messe de Nostre Dame, the earliest complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass attributable to a single composer, and influenced composers for centuries after his death.

First, a translation:
Since I am forgotten by you, sweet friend,
I say farewell to joy and a life of love.
Ill-fated was the day I placed my love in you,
Since I am forgotten by you, sweet friend.
But what I have promised you I will maintain,
Which is that I shall never have any other lover.
Since I am forgotten by you, sweet friend,
I say farewell to joy and a life of love.
Machaut was a secularist composer of the Ars Nova (or "New Art") as it states in the video description. What the description doesn't cover is why he made this piece; during his life, Machaut fell in love with a noblewoman of high class. They exchanged poems and love letters for many years but sadly the age gap between them forced the noblewoman to ,marry another man. Hence, he went out and wrote this beautiful peice of music.
Machaut never fell in love again.

Lyrics w/ translation:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since I am forgotten by you, sweet friend,
I bid farewell to a life of love and joy.
Unlucky was the day I placed my love in you;
Since I am forgotten by you, sweet friend.
But what was promised you I will sustain:
That I shall never have any other love.
Since I am forgotten by you, sweet friend,
I bid farewell to a life of love and joy.

Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377) was a French composer of the Ars Nova period in the 14th century. His music used very expressive melodies, with an interplay of duple and triple meter.
Composers during his time began to compose more secular music, including in the new genre the polyphonic chanson.
Here is an example of one, written in a low register, suitable for 3 men's voices.

Amazing that a piece written almost 700 years ago still can speak to us today.
@Musicienne-DAB1995
The poetic lyrics are beautiful and the dissonance here perfectly matches the poet's sense of loss.
@NuclearRoll
JoeisCooking Over years of time, this piece still finds it's self in my thoughts for nearly every day of each one of the years. It is the most important piece of music to me, its permanent of imprintion into the very foundations of my being are only rivaled by Hamlet. If not for these two pieces of art, I would not be alive today. Capturing something that has the ability to express a soul plagued with seemingly eternal and absolute isolation in a way that momentarily lifts the unbearable burden of existence, is something I find near to divinity. I will never meet these men, but they knew me and I knew them, and this understanding is something that transcends our individual time, reachs out into eternity with it's palms open, to grasp the forgotten hand of the tournamented soul stranded alone in the abyss of time.

I'm looking to try to reproduce this on today's modern equipment. Large woofers ECT.

I studied this song in my music appreciation class, and I just can't get enough of it! I am an opera singer, and this particular version sung by Jeremy Summerly makes me fall in love with music all over again.
@dvg1985
I can feel every word of this song, going through a divorce, and not wanting it. Machaut was truly a master, his compositions sound timeless
@TheCormorants
Wonderful isn't it? Even if you don't understand the harmony I am sure everyone can hear the odd bit....and hopefully appreciate it. Listen to more early music folks....try Bernart de Ventadorn and vihuela music of the Spanish renaissance too :)
@dvg1985
A true piece of art; timeless.
