Hailing from Western Australia, Watson began recording self-produced music as GUM in 2011. The alias is short for his nickname, Gumby. The project's first album, Delorean Highway, arrived on Spinning Top Music in 2014. He followed it a year later with Glamorous Damage, and the synth-hook-heavy Flash in the Pan saw release in 2016. Without relinquishing synths, a more streamlined psych rock defined The Underdog, which arrived on Spinning Top in 2018. Still putting out albums with Pond and on call for the live version of Tame Impala, Watson issued GUM's fifth long-player, Out in the World, in 2020.

(2) Gum are a London based, four piece musical pop group. Gum were born on Thursday 15th September 2011 and are not dead yet.
(3) Back in the late '80s, Melbourne's Andrew Curtis and Philip Samartzis collaborated in the aurally volatile project simply called Gum. With little expertise or training, the two gathered up what objects they were familiar with, in particular thrift store turntables and soiled records. Eschewing their original attraction to the giants of Industrial Culture, Gum quickly developed an aesthetic privileging the caustic rupture of skipping records and smoldering surface noise, predating the current avant-turntablist aficionados like Philip Jeck, Janek Schaefer, and Otomo Yoshihide. With the publication of Gum's Vinyl Anthology, 23five, Inc uncovers the bulk of Gum's work, including all of the material from their self-published albums Vinyl and 20 Years in Blue Movies and Yet to Fake an Orgasm as well as several infamous compilation tracks and plenty of unreleased material.

Misunderstanding
Gum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There must be some kind of mistake
I waited in the rain for hours
And you were late
Now it's not like me to say the right thing
But you could've called to let me know
I checked your number twice, don't understand it
Well I'd been waiting for this weekend
I thought that maybe we could see a show
Never dreamed I'd have this feeling
Oh but seeing you is believing
That's why I don't know why
You didn't show up that night
There must be some misunderstanding
There must be some kind of mistake
I was waiting in the rain for hours
And you were late
Since then I've been running around trying to find you
I went to the places that we always go
I rang your home but got no answer
Jumped in my car, I went round there
Still don't believe it
He was just leaving
There must be some misunderstanding
There must be some kind of mistake...
The lyrics to Gum's song "Misunderstanding" revolve around the singer experiencing a sense of confusion and disappointment due to a misunderstanding with someone they were expecting to meet. The song starts with the singer expressing their surprise and confusion about the situation, suggesting that there might have been some kind of mistake or miscommunication. The line "I waited in the rain for hours, And you were late" emphasizes the disappointment and inconvenience they faced, waiting for someone who never showed up.
In the following lines, the singer admits that they are not typically good at saying the right thing, but they still expected a phone call or some form of communication to let them know about the delay. They express their confusion and frustration by saying they checked the person's number multiple times and still don't understand why they didn't receive any notification. As a result, they ended up going back home, feeling let down and confused by the situation.
The second verse expands on the singer's anticipation for spending time with this person during the weekend, potentially attending a show together. They confess that they never expected to feel the level of disappointment they did when the person didn't show up. The line "Oh but seeing you is believing" implies that the singer had high hopes for their meeting and seeing the person would have confirmed their belief in the connection they shared. The unanswered question of why the person didn't show up lingers throughout the lyrics.
The bridge of the song shifts the focus to the singer's actions after the incident. They mention that since then, they have been actively searching for the person, going to the places they usually go to and trying to contact them. The frustration continues as the singer goes to the person's home but receives no answer. They impulsively jump in their car and go there, hoping to find some answers. However, the final lines reveal another unexpected twist as they discover that the person was just leaving, adding another layer of confusion to the situation.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of disappointment, confusion, and frustration stemming from a misunderstanding or miscommunication with someone the singer was excited to see. It highlights the emotional impact that a simple misunderstanding can have on a relationship and the feelings of longing and confusion that arise from it.
