You Make Your Own Luck
Gum Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You make your own luck
No one ever gave a fuck
Until you went and started off
On something new

You grow your own luck
Before you start to fill your cup
Take a sip from what everyone
Is trying to do

And
Somedays I try
To keep my brain on side
Love is the glue that holds it together
It's the only thing I know
That helps everyone

You make your own luck
How do you know when that's enough?
Or when it's where exactly you
Set out to be?

You grow your own luck
Right up out of all the muck
It's gonna take a lot more than
Serendipity

And somedays I try
To keep my brain on side
Love is the glue that holds it together

It's the only thing I know
That's helps everyone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gum's song "You Make Your Own Luck" are an anthem of self-motivation and perseverance. The first line "You make your own luck" establishes the main idea behind the song - that we are in control of our own luck and success. The following line "No one ever gave a fuck" emphasizes that no one else is going to do the work for us. We have to take the initiative and start something new to create our own luck.

The second verse continues with the idea of creating our own luck. "You grow your own luck" suggests that we have to put in the effort to cultivate our own opportunities. We cannot rely on what others are doing or wait for something to fall in our lap. The lines "Before you start to fill your cup, take a sip from what everyone is trying to do" advise that we should be aware of what others are doing and learn from them.

The chorus of the song communicates how the artist copes with the challenges of creating his own luck. He urges himself to focus on keeping his brain on his side, and reminds himself that love is the glue that holds everything together. This is a powerful message that there will be days when staying motivated is challenging, and it is necessary to keep pushing forward to achieve one's goals.

How can every song be this good? I keep listening to more and they're all amazing

@BeckerAviation

By far one of GUM's best songs. So so much emotion on it, specially on the inmense "finale" feel in the second half.

I also don't know how to explain it, but this song gives me such a good feeling about the world after coronavirus. It's weird.

@mirkopirisi1867

GUM is sooooo underrated! I love how he evolved from the first album to this gem.

@valeriubalan5963

ah ma lui è da solo? pensavo GUM fosse il nome di una band sua fuori dai Tame Impala come ha fatto nick con i Pond

@mirkopirisi1867

Sì, anche i tour li ha fatti da solo con drum machine e basi midi.

@amydavison8537
