Merry Go Round
Gunilla Thorn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(1)
You know he's gotta get away
To the merry-go-round and round
Count the times that he laid awake at night thinkin'
Am I goin' down now
Am I goin' down
Am I goin' down now, oh!
(2)
It's not easy puttin' on a smile
You're alone, lost and found
She waits at home just to love him through the night thinkin'
He's been gone so long now
Is he comin' home?
He's been gone so long now, oh!

(Chorus)
Merry-go-round and round (repeat)

(1)

[Chorus: Repeat 2X]

She waits alone
Just to love him through the night

I'm coming home babe

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gunilla Thorn's song Merry Go Round explore the struggles of a man who feels trapped in his life and seeks escape, needing to retreat to the constant, familiar cycle of a merry-go-round. The opening lines speak to his need to step away from his worries and anxieties, counting the times he's laid awake at night, wondering if and when things will eventually crumble. The repetition of "Am I goin' down now" emphasizes his fear of impending failure, and his desire to find solace in the merry-go-round, a place where things are predictable and he can regain some control over his increasingly chaotic life.

The second verse shifts focus to the woman waiting for him at home, who loves and supports him even as she worries about his safety and wellbeing. The repetition of "He's been gone so long now" highlights the sense of distance and separation that has developed between them as he struggles to cope with his problems. The chorus of "Merry-go-round and round" is both a literal reference to the carousel and a metaphor for the repetitive cycle of life that the man can't seem to escape.

Overall, the lyrics of Merry Go Round speak to the stress and anxieties that come with modern life, and the desire for a reprieve from the daily grind. The merry-go-round offers an escape from the chaos and uncertainty of the world, a place where one can simply enjoy the ride and let the worries of the world fade away for a little while.

A swedish pop singer making record in England, I guess...? Nice track, thank you...!

It's no wonder Joe Meek's equipment didn't fetch good prices at the clearance auction after his death in 1967. The abuse his tape recorders must have gone through to get this sound. The capstans and pinch rollers were probably knackered.

Sadly this is so ordinary. If only the Orchids had been given this song.
