Dead Horse
Guns N' Roses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sick of this life
Not that you'd care
I'm not the only one
With whom these feelings I share

Nobody understands
Quite why we're here
We're searchin' for answers
That never appear

But maybe if I looked real hard I'd
I'd see your tryin' too
To understand this life
That we're all goin' through
(Then when she said she was gonna like wreck my car
I didn't know what to do)

Sometimes I feel like I'm beatin' a dead horse
And I don't know why you'd be bringin' me down
I'd like to think that our love's worth a tad more
It may sound funny but you'd think by now
I'd be smilin'
I guess some things never change
Never change

I met an old cowboy
I saw the look in his eyes
Somethin' tells me he's been here before
'Cause experience makes you wise
I was only a small child
When the thought first came to me
That I'm a son of a gun and the gun of a son
That brought back the devil in me

But sometimes I feel like I'm beatin' a dead horse
I don't know why you'd be bringin' me down
I'd like to think that our love's worth a tad more
It may sound funny but you'd think by now
I'd be smilin'
I guess some things never change
Never change

I ain't quite what you'd call an old soul
Still wet behind the ears
I been around this track a couple o' times
But now the dust is startin' to clear
Oh yeah

Sometimes I feel like I'm beatin' a dead horse
I don't know why you'd be bringin' me down
I'd like to think that our love's worth a tad more
It may sound funny but you'd think by now
I'd be smilin'
Ooh yeah, I'd be smilin'
No way I'd be smilin'
Ooh smilin'

Sick of this life
Not that you'd care

I'm not the only one
With whom these feelings I share

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Guns N' Roses' "Dead Horse" discuss the intense feeling of being trapped and the search for meaning in life. The first two stanzas portray a sense of hopelessness, with the singer feeling that no one can understand their struggles. The chorus repeats the phrase "beating a dead horse," which refers to the futile act of continuing to pursue something that is already dead and unattainable. Despite this, the singer still holds onto the belief that their love is worth more, yet their inability to find happiness remains unexplained. The third stanza mentions meeting an experienced older man, which may imply that the singer is seeking guidance from someone who has gone through similar experiences.

The second half of the song reveals a more introspective side to the singer. They admit to being a "son of a gun" and having a devil within them. This may be a reflection of their struggle to find a sense of identity in a world that appears to be constantly changing around them. Nevertheless, they continue to search for meaning and understanding, with the final repetition of the phrase "I'd be smiling" suggesting that they still hold onto the hope that they will find happiness despite the struggles they face.

I’m just curious, if there anybody like me who listens to Guns n’ Roses ever single day, dreams and wishes he was young again so he could go to more of their concerts in their prime?
I have only two wishes in this world:
1) I wish my brother were still alive
2) I wish it were 1987 again so I could travel the world and see every single GnR show possible.
They were more than a band, they were an attitude, a lifestyle that I try to embrace everyday still.
GnFR FOREVER !!!!

@fitpresenter2030

Fire up the DeLorean, I'll be there with you. Sorry about your brother, and nice use of the 2nd conditional!

I so regret not going to a concert. I love the band and wish I could meet Axl. Just for a moment.....
