Sweet Child O' Mine
Guns N' Roses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's got a smile that it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories
Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky
Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry

Whoa, oh, oh
Sweet child o' mine
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Sweet love of mine

She's got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I'd hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain
Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place
Where as a child I'd hide
And pray for the thunder and the rain to quietly pass me by

Whoa, oh, oh
Sweet child o' mine
Whoa whoa, oh, oh, oh
Sweet love of mine

Whoa, yeah
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Sweet child o' mine
Whoa, oh, whoa, oh
Sweet love of mine
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Sweet child o' mine
Ooh, yeah
Ooh, sweet love of mine

Where do we go?
Where do we go now?
Where do we go?
Ooh, oh, where do we go?
Where do we go now?
Oh, where do we go now?
Where do we go? (Sweet child)
Where do we go now?
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay
Where do we go now?
Ah, ah

Where do we go?
Oh, where do we go now?
Oh, where do we go?
Oh, where do we go now?
Where do we go?
Oh, where do we go now?
Now, now, now, now, now, now, now

Overall Meaning

In this iconic rock ballad, Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose sings about his girlfriend (later wife), Erin Everly. The opening lines describe how her smile evokes memories of a simpler time, of childhood innocence and freshness. Seeing her face takes him away to that special place, perhaps a sweet memory from their own past. However, it's not all happy nostalgia, as Axl admits that staring at her too long would make him cry. This juxtaposition of happiness and sadness is characteristic of the song.

The second verse describes the girl's eyes, which are compared to "the bluest skies." It's interesting that Axl admits he'd hate to see any pain reflected in those eyes, perhaps a sign of his own fear of losing her or of hurting her in some way. Her hair is also described as a "warm safe place," which is another evocative and comforting image. As a child, he would hide in his own safe place, waiting for the storm outside to pass. The chorus repeats the title of the song, addressing the girl as the "sweet child o' mine" and expressing the singer's love for her.

The instrumental break features Slash's famous guitar solo, which has now become an iconic part of the song. The final section of the song is an outro featuring Axl's repeated question, "Where do we go now?" This is followed by several long "ohs" as the music fades out. This ending has a sense of open-endedness, as if there is more to come or more to explore. It gives the impression that the song could go on forever, showcasing the power of music to capture and express emotions beyond words.
