Train Kept a Rollin'
Guns N' Roses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, on a train, I met a dame,
She rather handsome, but (???) the same
She was pretty, from New York City
I'm walkin' down that old fair lane,
I'm in heat, I'm in love,
But I just couldn't tell her so

I said, train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
With a "heave!", and a "ho!"
But I just couldn't tell her so, no, no, no

Well, get along, sweet little woman get along
On your way, get along, sweet little woman get along
On your way,
I'm in heat, I'm in love,
But I just couldn't tell her so, no, no, no

Well, on a train, I met a dame,
She rather handsome, but (???) the same
She was pretty, from New York City
I'm walkin' down that old fair lane,
I'm in heat, I'm in love,
But I just couldn't tell her so

I said, train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
With a "heave!", and a "ho!"
But I just couldn't tell her so, no, no, no

Well, get along, sweet little woman get along
On your way, get along, sweet little woman get along
On your way,
I'm in heat, I'm in love,
But I just couldn't tell her

Well, we made a stop in Albequerque
She must'a thought I was a real cool jerk
Got off the train, and put her hands up
Lookin' so good I couldn't let her go
But I just couldn't tell her so

I said, train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long

I'm in heat, I'm in love,
But I just couldn't tell her

Overall Meaning

The Guns N' Roses song "Train Kept a Rollin'" is actually a cover of a 1951 song by Tiny Bradshaw, but Axl Rose and the band completely re-worked the lyrics and added their own unique sound to the song. The lyrics tell the story of a man who meets a woman on a train and finds her extremely attractive but is too afraid to tell her how he feels. The line "She rather handsome, but rude just the same" suggests that the woman is aloof and unapproachable.

The chorus of "Train kept a-rollin' all night long, with a heave and a ho" is a reference to the sound of a train moving along the tracks. It also represents the man's internal struggle, as he is unable to express his desires to the woman.

The verses repeat the same story of the man's desire and frustration, but the bridge adds an interesting twist. The train makes a stop in Albuquerque, and the woman considers the man a "real cool jerk." However, he cannot let her go and is still unable to express his feelings.

Overall, the song is a classic tale of unrequited love and the fear of rejection. The train serves as a metaphor for the man's journey towards expressing his love, but ultimately he is unable to take the leap.

Loaded like a freight train
Flyin' like an aeroplane
Feelin' like a space brain
One more time tonight (look out)
Well, I'm a west coast struttin'
One bad mother
Got a rattlesnake suitcase
Under my arm
Said I'm a mean machine
Been drinkin' gasoline
And honey you can make my motor hum
I got one chance left
In a nine live cat
I got a dog eat dog sly smile
I got a Molotov cocktail
With a match to go
I smoke my cigarette with style
An I can tell you honey
You can make my money tonight

Wake up late
Honey put on your clothes
Take your credit card to the liquor store
That's one for you and
Two for me by tonight
I'll be loaded like a freight train
Flyin' like an aeroplane
Feelin' like a space brain
One more time tonight

I'm on the nightrain
Bottoms up
I'm on the nightrain
Fill my cup
I'm on the nightrain
Ready to crash and burn
I never learn
I'm on the nightrain
I love that stuff
I'm on the nightrain
I can never get enough
I'm on the nightrain
Never to return, no

Loaded like a freight train
Flyin' like an aeroplane
Speedin' like a space brain
One more time tonight
I'm on the nightrain
And I'm lookin' for some
I'm on the nightrain
So's I can leave this slum
I'm on the nightrain
And I'm ready to crash and burn

Nightrain
Bottoms up
I'm on the nightrain
Fill my cup
I'm on the nightrain
Whoa yeah
I'm on the nightrain
Love that stuff
I'm on the nightrain
An I can never get enough
Ridin' the nightrain
I guess I
I guess, I guess, I guess
I never learn
On the nightrain
Float me home
Ooh, I'm on the nightrain
Ridin' the nightrain
Never to return
Nightrain

Its about blow, not so much drinking

@badbillyb

Absolutely my good man. But the phrase Night Train or On The NT has a fortified wine of the exact name, real rot gut stuff. Knew a couple folk that drank it. They were on the way down. If that's not enough, they also "distill" a Night Train Express which is a real joy, that one. It's about 8% more alcohol by vol. Ya know the express by definition doesn't make any stops per se, serves as a psychological "hospice" for alcoholics. Billy goats? Oh no! They're runnin, gone! Cheers.
