Starting out as a hip-hop producer at the age of 13, Dapperton made the switch to his current sound after a serious hospitalisation and the failure of his laptop.
Pairing infectious, nostalgia-laden tunes with high-concept filmclips, lauded for their high-concept cinematic execution, has proven to be a recipe for success. Blowing up through 2017, with two EPs dropped, and fans and the press alike taking notice, Dapperton's future looks bright.

You keep pushin' me aside
And I can't break through
There's no talkin' to you
It's so sad that you're leavin'
It takes time to believe it
But after all is said and done
You're gonna be the lonely one, oh
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel somethin' inside me say
"I really don't think you're strong enough, no"
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me say
"I really don't think you're strong enough, no"
What am I supposed to do
Just sit around and wait for you?
Well, I can't do that
And there's no turnin' back
I need time to move on
I need love to feel strong
'Cause I've had time to think it through
And maybe I'm too good for you, oh
Do you believe in life after love? (After love, after love, after love)
I can feel somethin' inside me say
"I really don't think you're strong enough, no"
Do you believe in life after love? (After love, after love, after love)
I can feel somethin' inside me say
"I really don't think you're strong enough, no"
Well, I know that I'll get through this
'Cause I know that I am strong
Oh, I don't need you anymore
Oh, I don't need you anymore
No, I don't need you anymore
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel somethin' inside me say
"I really don't think you're strong enough, no"
Do you believe in life after love? (After love, after love, after love)
I can feel somethin' inside me say
"I really don't think you're strong enough, no"
After love, after love, after love, after love
After love, after love, after love, after love
After love, after love, after love, after love
After love, after love, after love, after love
Gus Dapperton's "Believe" poignantly encapsulates the tumultuous journey of navigating a painful romantic relationship, marked by feelings of abandonment and helplessness. The opening lines express a sense of frustration and isolation; the singer feels repeatedly sidelined, reflecting on the emotional barriers that prevent communication with the partner. This struggle reveals a deep sense of longing and sadness, especially as the relationship nears its end. The acknowledgment of the partner's departure acts as a catalyst for introspection, leading the singer to grapple with the stark reality of loneliness that follows heartache.
As the song progresses, the recurring refrain questioning belief in “life after love” introduces a theme of resilience amid despair. The singer grapples with self-doubt, emphasized by an internal voice questioning their strength to move past the pain of separation. This powerful juxtaposition captures the duality of heartbreak—the desire for healing while feeling inadequate to achieve it. Such inner conflict amplifies the song's emotional gravity, suggesting that while the singer yearns for a positive outlook, they also confront their vulnerability in the face of lost love.
Moreover, the lyrics convey an evolving sense of agency. Initially, the singer expresses a passive resignation to waiting for the partner, yet this shifts as they assert the necessity of personal growth and the pursuit of love. The lines convey a realization that moving forward requires time and self-reflection, suggesting that the singer has begun to value their self-worth and recognize the need to prioritize their emotional health. This transformation implies an awakening where the singer contemplates the possibility that they might be better off without the partner, signaling a turning point in their emotional journey.
In the final sections, empowerment takes center stage as the singer declares independence from their ex-partner. The affirmation of strength and the definitive proclamation of “I don’t need you anymore” articulate a triumphant reclaiming of self-identity. This resolution underscores a critical theme in the song: overcoming heartache is possible, and self-reliance emerges as a powerful antidote to pain. The repetitive questioning about believing in life after love ultimately shifts from doubt to an affirmation of hope and strength, encapsulating the transformative journey from heartbreak to self-acceptance, reinforcing the idea that love may be complex, but life—and the potential for new love—can continue.

Passion is a hell of a drug, there is nothing more intoxicating than another's love!
Im digging the lower vocals that kick in around 2:25 this cover is brilliant and brings a whole new emotional pull to it. Even with a slower tempo, the sound is still so intense and powerful. A strong mix of desire and the aching feeling, the pull you have. Until you have that person in your arms.

This is insane bro. I loved the melody of this song when I was a little kid.
Ever since “Prune you talk funny” you’ve been one of my idols. I came back years later to see what you’ve made, and I’m so glad I found this.
