Starting out as a hip-hop producer at the age of 13, Dapperton made the switch to his current sound after a serious hospitalisation and the failure of his laptop.
Pairing infectious, nostalgia-laden tunes with high-concept filmclips, lauded for their high-concept cinematic execution, has proven to be a recipe for success. Blowing up through 2017, with two EPs dropped, and fans and the press alike taking notice, Dapperton's future looks bright.
Sober Up
Gus Dapperton Lyrics

Just how I like it, so close to me, so close to me
I want more, in my stream
Right where I want you, so far from me, so far me, well
I guess I should sober up if I wanna see it bleed
And have my faith and open up, a love that fell there from the screen
'Cause every morning you will come but she won't wait another weekYeah, it's confusing, I'm your answer, if you move me, I'm your dancer
I'm your dancer, I'm your dancer
I'm your dancer, I'm your dance
I'm your dancer, I'm your dancer
I'm your dancer, I'm your dance
I implore cocaine
I like to take it excessively, excessively
To my core, and play
You'll fucking hate me, incessantly, incessantly, well
I guess I should sober up if I wanna see it bleed
And have my faith and open up, a love that fell there from the screen
'Cause every morning you will come but she won't wait another week
Yeah, it's confusing, I'm your answer, if you move me, I'm your dancer
I'm your dancer, I'm your dancer
I'm your dancer, I'm your dance
I'm your dancer, I'm your dancer
I'm your dancer, I'm your dance
I'm your dancer, I'm your dancer
I'm your dancer, I'm your dance
I'm your dancer, I'm your dancer
I'm your dancer, I'm your dance
The first verse of Gus Dapperton's "Sober Up" describes the singer's desire to be close to someone, to feel their presence so deeply that it's almost suffocating – he likes it when he can't breathe. He wants more of this experience, but it seems like the other person is always just out of reach, evading him when he reaches out to them. The singer is constantly oscillating between wanting more and feeling like the object of his affection is always "so far" from him.
The chorus suggests that the singer is using drugs to cope with this confusing dynamic, but acknowledges that this coping mechanism may not be sustainable in the long run. He says that he needs to "sober up" if he wants to see his situation clearly and build a real relationship with this person. He seems to be hinting that the love he's seeking isn't just a fantasy – it's something that he can make into a reality if he's willing to let go of his current way of coping with the situation.
The second verse expands on the singer's use of cocaine, implying that he's been abusing it in order to keep his feelings buried and maintain some sense of control over the situation. He's afraid that if he lets himself feel everything fully, the other person will hate him for it. The chorus repeats, suggesting that the singer's desire to build a real relationship with this person is still there, even though he's struggling to make it happen.
Overall, "Sober Up" seems to be a bittersweet meditation on the difficulty of pursuing love, particularly when it feels just out of reach. The singer's use of cocaine and his tendency to get lost in his own head underscore this theme, hinting that, while there may be a way out of his current situation, it's not going to be an easy one.

So I've been talking for this guy for 4 months since March, and he is the one who introduced me to Gus. Since then, I've been listening to his music and I thank him for that. With this new song coming up, I still remember the time when we first talked, but I know we are becoming strangers once again. I don't want that to happen, but I'm preparing for what's next. I miss everything we had. I hope he read this because I know he will be listening to this song. PS if you're reading this, you're still my favorite fish. -Elijah
