Saturn is my most favorite movement of The Planets. It's powerful, yet not bombastic as others, yet also underappreciated. It truly is one of the most beautiful movements of the entire suite.

I’m convinced that 7:43 to the end is what greets you at the gates of Heaven. Pure beauty.

And just before it too with the harp interlude! I've always considered the harps to be the moment when you "see" the gates, and when the woodwinds kick in its when you start moving towards them

And I always have the terrifying picture in my head from 5:48 on of the nuclear Armageddon..... The picture of the sirens in The Time Machine.

Hopefully not with those two loud coughs to usher you through...

Regardless whether it was based on astrology or astronomy, what I take away from this magnificent masterpiece is the way it touches my emotions.
A space drifter pulled into the gravity trap of the Solar system. As his ship approaches the Lord of the Rings, he can't help but become in awe at the planet's mysterious look that strikes fear in his heart.
After having explored the planet long enough, he decides it's time for him to leave.
As he exerts his ship's impulse to depart, he feels overwhelmed. His impression has been altered. He approached in fear, but departs with appreciation of this celestial body's beauty and awesomeness.

Tori nator your description reminds me of 2001 a space odyssey. Just rewatched it for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. It’s a great pairing with The Planets!

Admiration and fear, together.I liked what you expressed.

Holst was also a gifted astrologer. He even captured the seriousness of the first and second Saturn returns. And the calm after the storm of enduring Lord Karma's lessons.
