The band consists of Adam Gardner and Ryan Miller on guitar and vocals and Brian Rosenworcel on percussion. Multi-instrumentalist and backup vocalist Joe Pisapia played with the band from 2003-2010. Luke Reynolds took Pisapia's place to tour with the band for their 2010 album, Easy Wonderful, and has remained with the band since. The band is noted for its catchy, poppy melodies, and the distinctive hand-drumming on percussion. They are also known for their humor, including a joke album released in 2003, The Meowstro Sings: Guster's Keep It Together, wherein the lyrics are replaced with (off-melody) meowing.
The band has released eight studio albums which are, in chronological order, Parachute, Goldfly, Lost and Gone Forever, Keep It Together, Ganging Up On the Sun, Easy Wonderful, Evermotion, and their most recent, Look Alive, which was released on January 18th, 2019. Farewell
Guster Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A wish that will never come true
You tried to beat gravity, now what can you do?
Ahh, goodbye, farewell, tonight
Are you still consumed?
A wish can't make something untrue
Ahh, goodbye, farewell, tonight
Fly with me, take my hands, we are free
We can disappear from the others
Laugh with me, take my hand, we are free
We will disappear to the other
In Guster's song Farewell, the lyrics present a contemplative tone that grapples with the concept of accepting change and mortality. The opening lines “Who you talkin' to? A wish that will never come true” emphasizes a feeling of lost hope and disappointment. The listener is then confronted with the image of someone who tried to challenge the natural order of things, represented by gravity, and ultimately failed. This sentiment is echoed in the repetition of the phrase “you tried to beat/cheat gravity, now what can you do?”.
As the song progresses, the listener is encouraged to let go of their struggles and surrender to their fate. When the lyrics ask, “Are you still consumed? A wish can't make something untrue,” they acknowledge the futility of wanting to control the unpredictable events of one’s life. Instead, the chorus repeats “Ahh, goodbye, farewell, tonight” which creates a sense of closure, but also suggests a final parting. The song offers an alternative to hoping for things that cannot be changed, proposing instead that one can find freedom in the company of another. The lyrics state, “Fly with me, take my hands, we are free, We can disappear from the others, Laugh with me, take my hand, we are free, We will disappear to the other,” which indicates that two people can find solace in each other, even if for a fleeting moment.
In summary, the lyrics to Guster's song Farewell explore themes of acceptance, loss, and the beauty of living in the present. The lyrics suggest that while we are unable to control our fate, we can find freedom in connection and the moments that we share with others.
