The band consists of Adam Gardner and Ryan Miller on guitar and vocals and Brian Rosenworcel on percussion. Multi-instrumentalist and backup vocalist Joe Pisapia played with the band from 2003-2010. Luke Reynolds took Pisapia's place to tour with the band for their 2010 album, Easy Wonderful, and has remained with the band since. The band is noted for its catchy, poppy melodies, and the distinctive hand-drumming on percussion. They are also known for their humor, including a joke album released in 2003, The Meowstro Sings: Guster's Keep It Together, wherein the lyrics are replaced with (off-melody) meowing.
The band has released eight studio albums which are, in chronological order, Parachute, Goldfly, Lost and Gone Forever, Keep It Together, Ganging Up On the Sun, Easy Wonderful, Evermotion, and their most recent, Look Alive, which was released on January 18th, 2019. In addition, they have released a total of eleven live albums, spanning the years 2003-2015.
Great Escape

Dropped everything glad to be persuade this time
Into the car baby bleed the gas
Fast is fast never turning back
Oh yeah not scared of that
The past has passed and we cannot take it back
They want to know if we could get away
Yeah we backed it up and made our great escape
The furthest exodus getting somewhere
While the messengers get the message in
Try to capture us we've done nothing wrong
Please come tempt me steal me from this priss-teen life
Oh so gently everyone feels pain this time
Into the car baby bleed the gas
Fast is fast never turning back
Oh yeah not scared of that
The past has passed and we cannot take it back
They want to know if we could get away
Yeah we backed it up and made our great escape
When the dust will settle and they discover
The furthest exodus getting somewhere
While the messengers get the message in
Try to capture us we've done nothing wrong
Oh she wants me
And she needs me
She can have me all of the time
Oh she wants me
And she needs me
Circle circle dot dot dot
They want to know if we could get away
Yeah we backed it up and made our great escape
When the dust will settle and they discover
The furthest exodus getting somewhere
While the messengers get the message in
Try to capture us we've done nothing wrong
The lyrics to Guster's "Great Escape" paint a picture of someone willing to leave everything behind and embark on a wild adventure with someone who makes them feel alive. The opening line "please come tempt me you've got something good in mind" sets the tone for the rest of the song, suggesting that the person being addressed is the catalyst for the adventure. The singer is "glad to be persuade this time," indicating that they may have been hesitant to take risks in the past but are now willing to let go and live in the moment.
The chorus repeatedly emphasizes the desire to escape and leave their old lives behind, asserting that they "cannot take it back" and are "not scared of that." The second verse adds a sense of danger, with the line "try to capture us we've done nothing wrong" implying that the singer and their companion may be running from someone or something. However, the overall tone of the song is one of excitement and possibility, with the promise of reaching a destination where they will be "getting somewhere" and leaving their troubles behind.
Overall, "Great Escape" captures the feeling of wanting to break free from the monotony of everyday life and embrace the unknown. It speaks to the universal desire to take risks and live life to the fullest, even if it means leaving the familiar behind.
