Enjoy Yourself
Guy Lombardo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You work and work for years and years, you're always on the go
You never take a minute off, too busy makin' dough
Someday, you say, you'll have your fun, when you're a millionaire
Imagine all the fun you'll have in your old rockin' chair

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think

You're gonna take that ocean trip, no matter, come what may
You've got your reservations made, but you just can't get away
Next year for sure, you'll see the world, you'll really get around
But how far can you travel when you're six feet underground?

Your heart of hearts, your dream of dreams, your ravishing brunette
She's left you and she's now become somebody else's pet
Lay down that gun, don't try, my friend, to reach the great beyond
You'll have more fun by reaching for a redhead or a blonde

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink

The years go by, as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Guy Lombardo's song "Enjoy Yourself" relay an important message about the value of enjoying life while one still has the chance. The first verse describes a workaholic who never takes a break and is always busy making money. The person imagines that they will have fun once they become a millionaire and retire, but the idea of retiring becomes less and less likely as time continues to pass. The chorus advises that it is important to enjoy oneself while still in good health and not put it off for a later time that may never come.

The second verse continues with the idea that one must take advantage of the present moment. The person plans to take an ocean trip but is constantly putting it off for various reasons. The verse ends on a somber note, suggesting that even if the trip is eventually taken, one can only travel so far when they are buried six feet underground. The final verse addresses the pain of heartbreak and the desire to escape that pain by any means necessary, even suicide. The chorus repeats the message of enjoying oneself while one still has the chance, but with a twist. The idea of having fun by reaching for a redhead or a blonde suggests that enjoying life can provide a distraction from heartbreak and personal problems.

Overall, "Enjoy Yourself" is a song that encourages listeners to prioritize enjoyment and make the most of life. The lyrics provide a reminder that life is short and it is important to live in the moment and take advantage of opportunities while they are available.

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as you wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Hello, I'm Terry, and I'm going to enjoy myself first
It's good to be wise when you're young
'cause you can only be young but the once
Enjoy yourself and have lots of fun
So glad and live life longer than you've ever done
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as you wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Never right, yes I know
Get wisdom, knowledge and understanding
These three, were given free by the maker
Go to school, learn the rules, don't be no faker
It's not wise for you to be a foot stool
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as you wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as you wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think

Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
You never go to night clubs and you just don't care to dance
You don't have time for silly things like moonlight and romance
You only think of dollar bills tied neatly in a stack
But when you kiss a dollar bill, it doesn't kiss you back
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think

My mom is 98 and has dementia but lately she's been singing this song (only the introduction) she couldn't remember all the lyrics so I had to Google. She loved listening to it and I love it too! I'm so glad she still remembers this song. Such a sweet lady, my mom. Lessons to be learned

My Gramma passed at the age 93 in 2020. She would always sing this jingle along with all my aunties and uncles that she has since reunited with! Enjoy yourself gang, it’s later than you think!

My mom sung this to me on her death bed - to encourage me to go on - after she was gone - It took me awhile to find it on the web after she died - so I could hear it for myself. My little kids and I danced around to it a few months after she died - and i found it

"Disfruta de tí mismo, es más tarde de lo que piensas" buena canción que nos llama la atención que la vida no solo es trabajar y ganar dinero sino que debemos divertirnos también mientras podamos hacerlo.

I like this song which is so well sung with realistic and meaningful lyrics. My late Dad had this record and liked to play it when I was a kid. I remember him sitting in the sofa while I played my toy cars in the living room of the house we lived then. Meanwhile Mom cooked supper for us. Nice memories.
