Red Roses For A Blue Lady
Guy Lombardo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want some red roses for a blue lady
Mister florist, take my order please
We had a silly quarrel the other day
Hope these pretty flowers chase her blues away
Wrap up some red roses for a blue lady
Send them to the sweetest gal in town
And if they do the trick, I'll hurry back to pick
Your best white orchid for her wedding gown

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Guy Lombardo's "Red Roses For A Blue Lady" are both beautiful and sentimental. The song tells the story of a gentleman who has gotten into an argument with his significant other and wishes to make it up to her with a beautiful bouquet of red roses. The opening line, "I want some red roses for a blue lady," sets up the premise of the song, stating the singer's desire to cheer up his significant other with a thoughtful gesture.

The second line, "Mister florist, take my order please," implies a sense of urgency and the need for immediate action. The singer is aware of his mistake and wants to rectify the situation promptly. He acknowledges the "silly quarrel" they had, indicating that the argument was trivial but nevertheless, has affected his significant other. The chorus of the song, "Wrap up some red roses for a blue lady, send them to the sweetest gal in town," reinforces the notion that the singer wants to make his significant other feel special and cherished.

Finally, the last line of the song, "And if they do the trick, I'll hurry back to pick your best white orchid for her wedding gown," demonstrates the deep love that the singer has for his significant other. He wants to use the red roses to make amends and, if successful, is willing to take the next step with her. The lyrics, when combined with the song's gentle melody, make for a beautiful and emotional listening experience.

What we've lost; class, elegance, beautiful melodies, exceptional musicianship. All you have to do is listen to what passes for popular music nowadays to see the contrast.

yes!

@AugustBurnsSam

We've lost none of that, you just have to look for it.

What?! Guy Lombardo was on the Ed Sullivan Show?! Wow!! What a rare piece of film this is.

@lonestarfriend

Old school, even for 1965. 🙂 And I think is the first time I've watched a video of Guy Lombardo.

Same here, I just remembered him at the new year party..

Another great post! Guy Lombardo had over 200 records on the charts from 1927 to 1954. "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" had been a Top 10 hit for him in 1949 (and an even bigger hit for Vaughn Monroe). The song was enjoying a revival in popularity in 1965 due to a remake by Vic Dana. Guy hailed from Ontario, Canada, and I have visited his birthplace, being a Canadian myself. There used to be a museum dedicated to him in his hometown. His tagline was "The sweetest music this side of heaven", and his New Year's Eve programs used to herald in the start of the new year before Dick Clark's show became the mainstay. The lovely song was written by Sid Tepper & Roy Bennett.

I would also love to see the Bachelors sing "I Believe" from this episode. Thanks again for this great video!

Thank you for sharing! In 1986 I went to Niagara Falls. I was so Thankful that I also visited the Canadian side, it was Beautiful. I took a trip up to the Finger lakes. Watced the sunset off of Lake Ontario. One of my favorite times of the day, next to the sunrise. It was so Peaceful. I would like to go back someday to Niagara Falls. Have a Wonderful Day! 💖

@@that70sgirl90 I had the opportunity to visit Niagara Falls twice, and it was really wonderful. The best experience occurred when I was on my Grade 8 class trip, and my teacher and I left the rest of the kids and teachers behind because I told him I had never seen the Falls. It was great, and when we ran back to the school bus afterward, the other teachers and some students were worried because they didn't know where we had gone. My teacher just said "I don't care!" and that was it. I never forgot that he did that just so I could see the Falls up close.

I hope you have a wonderful day too!

@@TomElvisSmith Beautiful memory... those are the things you never forget. They mean the most to you as you travel life's highway. I went on the Maid of the Mist, and did the walk up the side of the falls. I'm glad I did it! It is something I will never forget. If you ever go back there, I highly recommend doing that, it is so worth it! Thank you, I always hope for a Wonderful Day! 💖
