Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

And surely ye'll be your pint stowp
And surely I'll be mine
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

We twa hae run about the braes
An pou'd the gowans fine
But we've wander'd mony a weary fitt
Sin' auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Auld Lang Syne, written by Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788, speak of the love and camaraderie between two old friends, who reflect on lost time and treasured memories together. The phrase "auld lang syne" can be loosely translated to "for old time's sake." The singer begins by posing a question, should old acquaintances be forgotten and never thought of again? However, the answer is clear, and the two friends resolve to not forget the good times they shared in the past, symbolized by sharing a cup of kindness.

The second and third stanzas see the singer and the friend committing to stay in touch and continue their friendship. They toast to each other with their drinks, and reminisce about running around the hills and picking flowers. The fourth stanza is a bit more somber, acknowledging the distance that has grown between the two. The two friends have "wandered many a weary foot" since they last saw each other. Despite this, they commit to continue toasting to each other with a "cup of kindness" for the sake of old times.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And the days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll drink a cup of kindness yet
For the sake of auld lang syne
And surely you will buy your cup
And surely I'll buy mine!
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For the sake of auld lang syne
We two have paddled in the stream
From morning sun till night
The seas between us Lord and swell
Since the days of auld lang syne
For old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind
Should old acquaintance be forgot
For the sake of auld lang syne?
For old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind
Should old acquaintance be forgot
In the days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll drink a cup of kindness yet
For the sake of auld lang syne

My husband and I married 7 years ago on New Years Eve and this song played at our wedding. He unfortunately passed away this year. It's been so painful without him, but still this song brings me some comfort. I get to remember dancing with him, and nothing can ever take that from me. 💟 Happy 2024 everyone!

@@nhmooytis7058So you remember these real Golden Oldies as the kind of music your parents listened to? My dad made fun of me for listening to big band and blues saying that it's what his dad listened to, he would have been your age this year

@nhmooytis7058

@@richarddavis8863 not just my parents, my dad who was born in 1908 died in 1953 and left a great record collection...all through my childhood I listened to music from the thirties and forties! I actually listened to them more than my mom! She liked Doris Day I liked the Andrews sisters!
