Because He Lives
Guy Penrod Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How sweet to hold
A new born baby
And feel the pride
And the joy that he gives
But greater still that calm assurance
We can face uncertain days (holding)
We can face uncertain days
Because he lives
Sing it with us
And because he lives I can face tomorrow
Because he lives all fear is gone
Because I know he holds the future
And life is worth the living just because he lives

And then one day
We'll all cross that river
And fight life's final war with pain
And then, as death gives way to victory
I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know he reigns

Because he lives I can face tomorrow
Because he lives all fear is gone
Because I know, I know he holds the future
And life is worth the living just because he lives

He lives
He lives

Overall Meaning

The song "Because He Lives" by Guy Penrod is a powerful testimony of the hope and victory that comes from the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The first verse describes the despair and confusion felt by the disciples after Jesus' death. They had lost their friend and teacher, and all of their dreams had been shattered. The imagery of the garden, the jail, the hammer, and the nail all evoke the intense emotions of the crucifixion, and the line "how could a night be so long" highlights the feelings of hopelessness and darkness that they experienced in that moment.

However, the chorus of the song provides a stark contrast to this despair, as it declares that "then came the morning." This line is repeated several times throughout the song, emphasizing the importance and power of the resurrection. The stone was rolled away, hope rose with the dawn, and shadows vanished before the sun. Death had lost and life had won. The imagery in this chorus is full of light, life, and victory, and it speaks to the transformative power that comes from the resurrection.

The second verse of the song shifts focus to Mary, the mother of Jesus. She too had experienced the pain and sorrow of watching her son die, and she had felt the weight of the world's rejection of him. But, as the chorus proclaims, she too can rejoice in the morning that came after the darkness. She knew in her heart that her son would live again, and her faith was vindicated by the resurrection.

I was in a car accident some years ago and injured my back. I was told I would never walk again. The doctors were wrong and I did eventually walk but pain kept me from working and I felt I was a burden to my wife and family. I hated life and made it miserable for my wife and two teenage children. To keep some semblance of peace with my wife I continued going to church although I hated it. I did not listen to anything coming from the stage but one evening they sang this song. I had heard it many times but for some reason when they sang BECAUSE HE LIVES I sat up and listened. The next verse I CAN FACE TOMORROW was my turning point. My wife and I recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with our two children and two grandchildren.
