Tennessee Christmas
Guy Penrod Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come on weatherman
Give us a forecast snowy white
Can't you hear the prayers
Of every childlike heart tonight?

Rockies are calling
Denver snow falling
Somebody said it's four feet deep
But it doesn't matter

Give me the laughter
I'm gonna choose to keep
Another tender Tennessee Christmas
The only Christmas for me

Where the love circles around us
Like the gifts around our tree
Well I know there's more snow
Up in Colorado

Than my roof will ever see
But a tender Tennessee Christmas
Is the only Christmas for me

Every now and then
I got a wanderin' urge to see
Maybe California
Maybe tinsel town's for me
There's a parade there

We'd have it made there
Bring home a tan for new year's eve
Sure sounds exciting
Awfully inviting

Still I think I'll gonna keep
Another tender Tennessee Christmas
The only Christmas for me
Where the love circles around us

Like the gifts around our tree
Well they say in L.A.
It's a warm holiday
It's the only place to be

But a tender Tennessee Christmas
Is the only Christmas for me

Everybody
It sounds good when you're singing along
Ohh, you know I want to be home
Mmm hmm

Well I know there's more snow
Up in Colorado
Than my roof will ever see
But a tender Tennessee Christmas

Is the only Christmas for me

A tender Tennessee Christmas
Is the only Christmas for me

Overall Meaning

Guy Penrod's "Tennessee Christmas" is a simple and charming song that highlights the joy of Christmas in Tennessee. The song begins with a plea to the weatherman to give a snowy forecast - this request is met with childlike excitement in the anticipation of snowfall. Even though the Rockies may be covered in snow, Tennessee Christmas is the only Christmas for the singer as it is where the love of family surrounds them. The line "The only Christmas for me" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the importance of staying true to one's roots and family traditions during the holiday season.

There is a tug between the desire to travel and experience new places but also feel the pull of home and the security of its traditions. The song describes the attractiveness of California and perhaps a New Year's tan but what wins over is the love and warmth of the Tennessee Christmas that surrounds the singer.

Overall, the song is a celebration of simple joys and finding treasures in what is meaningful and undeniably genuine. This song beautifully captures the essence of being true to oneself and holding traditions with care and love.

When my son was just a baby one night when he was particularly cranky i was walking the floors trying to calm him down. I decided to try and sing to him and even though it was nowhere near Christmas this is the first song that came to mind and it helped calm him. After that it was the daddy song song for us when he was trying to get to sleep and it was daddy helping.

One night when i was doing this I got to the part where the lyrics are and i know there's more snow when my wife called out and pointed outside. Look at the window above the front door and just as i said those lines it started to snow.

Always loved this song and now it holds an even more special place in my heart for me
