Of Guy’s soulful voice Cropper enthuses, “Guy is one of the best singers I’ve ever worked with. He's the voice that we've been looking for.” Two tracks off the album are I've Been Loving You Too long (an Otis Redding classic) and Take Me To The River (an Al Green classic),

If these ashes came from flames
And if we relight these embers
Will they just burn out again?
We can try, we should try
Someday I know we're gonna feel again
Just like we did when we were younger
Gonna beat again like a drum
Like a drum
Like a drum
Just 'cause I, I can't measure and I can't hold it in my hands
Doesn't mean, doesn't mean that I should just give up on change
We can try, we should try
Someday I know we're gonna feel again
Just like we did when we were younger
Someday I know we're gonna beat again
Gonna beat again like a drum
Like a drum
Like a drum
Like a drum
We're gonna beat again
I can already hear the sound
And we're gonna beat again
Yes I know that it shakes the ground.
Ain't gonna miss a beat
Ain't gonna miss a beat
Ain't gonna miss a beat, yeah
Someday I know we're gonna feel again
Just like we did when we were younger
Someday I know we're gonna beat again
Gonna beat again like a drum
Like a drum
Like a drum
Like a drum
Like a drum
Someday I know we're gonna feel again
Just like we did when we were younger
Someday I know we're gonna beat again
Gonna beat again like a drum
Like a drum
Like a drum
Like a drum
Like a drum
The main theme of Guy Sebastian's song 'Like a Drum' is the hope for a new beginning. The first two lines of the song seem to be highlighting the fact that the singer has something in their present life that they can't remember and are unsure whether the source of the 'ash' they are left with was a positive or negative experience. They then ponder the possibility of relighting these embers and whether they would fizzle out again. This could be interpreted as a reflection on a past relationship or some other kind of event that resulted in a sense of emptiness.
However, the chorus brings positivity as it hints at a time in the future when they will feel again "just like we did when we were younger." The repetition of "we're gonna beat again like a drum" creates a sense of hope and optimism. It indicates a fresh start, a chance to play the beat of their heart again rather than a life of numbness.
The phrase "Ain't gonna miss a beat" at the end of the song solidifies the idea that the singer is ready for an emotional and physical revival. The upbeat and catchy melody complements the lyrics well and is exactly what one would expect from a song that is all about finding positivity and energy again after being in a lull.
