As I see no description about how Ligeti got this unusual idea, well, I'll be the one to explain it then!
His main inspiration for this pice was the characteristics of Gamelan music, an Indonesian traditional ensemble of Java and Bali, which mainly has metallophones and a set of hand-played drums (kendhang). Various things reflect this, for example: the lack of defined tempo (and so it's structure of additive pulsation), the division of just one melody into both hands (making them cross one over the other), the "legatto" and "cantabile" mannierism, etc.

It is quite interessting, in fact, as it was not the first time for a music composer to be inspired by the Gamelan: Debussy himself discovered this exotic music at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889 and composed music based on it, like the Pagodes (with the same pentatonic scale and overlapping rhythms as the Gamelan), or "The Snow is Dancing" from the "Children's Corner" suite (again, whith this overlapping rhythms playing one same melody with its notes distributed between both hands).

As I find this cases fascinating myself, if anyone wants to share any similar information regarding the Gamelan, I'll be more than glad!
