The original GCH began playing birthday parties, clubs, and festivals which eventually led to numerous larger venues throughout the northeast, including four years on Warped Tour (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008). During this time, GCH released four self-produced CDs: "Hed Candy" (1999), "Greasy Kids Stuff" (2000), "For the Kids" (2001) and "Papercut Chronicles EP" (2004).
"As cruel as School Children" was released on July 25, 2006. A second version of the album, released on November 4, 2006 additionally contains the single "Cupid's Chokehold"
After the release of "For the Kids", lead singer Travis McCoy won MTV's Direct Effect MC Battle and as a prize, he appeared in Styles P's video "Daddy Get That Cash".
The current configuration of GCH formed as guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo joined in late 2004, with bassist Eric Roberts joining in mid 2005.
After hearing the song "Taxi Driver", Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy invited the band to one of his shows. Gym Class Heroes then went on to join Pete Wentz's label, Decaydance Records, an imprint of Fueled by Ramen. Travis later said that Stump's support, coupled with the label's touring ethos and family atmosphere, led the band to signing with Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen.
Gym Class Heroes appeared on the Warped Tour in the summer of 2005 and 2006. The band completed their leg of a tour with The All-American Rejects on Nov. 29 in Las Vegas.
Their recent hit "Clothes Off" reached the No# 3 spot in the uk top 40 charts.
Lead singer Travis McCoy is currently working on a side project called Tequila Mockingbird with Nick Scimeca and is due out sometime early next year.
In mid-September 2008, Gym Class Heroes put out their album, "The Quilt". It was recorded during their late 2007 tour with Fall Out Boy and Plain White T's, "Young Wild Things". Soon after toured with Lil' Wayne on his "I Am Music" tour (late 2008).
The next album will be titled The Papercut Chronicles 2. The Stereo Hearts Songfacts reports that the first single from the album, "Stereo Hearts," features Maroon 5 frontman and The Voice coach Adam Levine on the chorus. It was released for download on iTunes on June 14, 2011 and also sent to all radio stations around the world the same day.
Travis McCoy is currently on a humanitarian trip across the globe to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS and how to prevent it.
This Thing Called Life
Gym Class Heroes Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Can't be livin' by the gun, man I never even held one, but does that make me less of a man?
'Cause I got a spray can not a gun in my hand. I got 4 clips of innocence.
Blaster gas. Leave them speachless I'm sketchin pieces while the cats is killin my thesis.
It's hard to find peace of mind but when you do, it's hard to keep.
Ignorance will take you out in your sleep.
It's just a little hard to swallow nobody's a leader no more.
I know it's always hard to believe. They cast to sea. They catch a disease.
They quickly try to breach into my family
But somethin's gotta give before I bring my kids into this world
We gotta rearrange the way we live, we gotta rearrange the way we live.
This thing called life is made of many decisions. The choices you make determine you and your livin'. There's a rocketship headed for truth, you better get it. You find yourself a waste of time tryin to fit in. This thing called life comes to many conclusions. You get one shot. You either win it or lose it. & I had to break free from my state of confusion but it gave me the strength to see through hate's illusions.
(Like that ya'll, L-like that, L-L-Like that ya'll, Like that, L-L-Like that, Like that, L-L-Like that ya'll, like that [x2])
Sometimes I push my mental way beyond my boundaries and sometimes it's detrimental to my health. Nowadays, we can't be out for self. We got to free one another, Kill that racial blindfold so we can see one another. Ignorant racist leave a scar tissue on the faces of beautiful human beings. I see a new light, this thing called life creep up from behind like a sign on your back. Spark your mind with a rhyme and it's time to react. Addicted to this rap sh*t like he be to crack. It won't stop writing the mic is like a crack pipe. Don't get the wrong idea. this is for the cats usin' the third eye vision to try and find why we're here. You need to get up, get out. You're all in the wrong without and I hope it don't take you too long to figure it out. I said I hope it don't take you too long.

(Now clap your hands and say yeah! [x3])
This is more than just music to us, its like These cats ain't that amusin' to us. We on a another level. Pissin' on their heads from above. We in the clouds watchin over the kids (watchin' over) [x4]

In "This Thing Called Life" by Gym Class Heroes, the lyrics delve into the rapper's perspective on life and the choices one must make. The opening line "I live by the sun and I'm a die by the sun" suggests that the artist is fully committed to living his life to the fullest. He then questions whether not having a gun means that he is less of a man, asserting his identity as a graffiti artist with spray cans in his hands. Despite the contrast between the two, the lyrics suggest that it is important to embrace non-violent ways of expressing oneself.
The rapper then switches gears, addressing the issue of race and inequality. He suggests that we must break free from our state of confusion and eradicate ignorance to free one another from our mental boundaries. He believes that education is key, and it is through learning that we can break down racial barriers and see how beautiful human beings truly are. The chorus, repeated throughout the song, hammers home the idea that life is a series of choices that we must make, and how we choose to live determines the outcome.
Overall, Gym Class Heroes's song "This Thing Called Life" is a heartfelt message about the importance of living to the fullest, embracing creativity in non-violent ways, and understanding that the choices we make determine our destiny.
