Pale
HÆLOS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hold on
It won't hurt
Just swallow your whole
These shadows
We follow
Into the pale
The mist and the milk
Just don't say

No sunlight
No sunlight no
It's all right when your light goes
No sunlight
No sunlight no

No sunlight no
It's all right when your light goes
No sunlight
No sunlight no

Washed up
These beaches
Like salt to your soul
So deaf to
Those preachers
Broken and whole
No modern psalm no

No sunlight
No sunlight no
It's all right when your light goes
No sunlight
No sunlight no

No sunlight no
It's all right when your light goes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of HÆLOS's song Pale speak of surrendering to the darkness and the unknown, finding comfort in the absence of light. The first stanza, "Hold on, it won't hurt, just swallow your whole / These shadows we follow into the pale / The mist and the milk, just don't say," sets the mood for the rest of the song. The song seems to be about accepting the inevitability of death and the unknown that comes with it. The imagery of shadows and mist suggests a sense of uncertainty and mystery, as if the singer is being led blindly into the unknown.

The second stanza of the song becomes more melancholic, with the lines "Washed up, these beaches like salt to your soul / So deaf to those preachers, broken and whole / No modern psalm, no." Here, the singer seems to be reflecting on the brokenness and futility of religion, or at the very least the insufficiency of its answers. The line "washed up beaches" seems to create a sense of abandonment, as if the singer is stranded without answers or guidance.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "no sunlight" several times, which emphasizes the darkness that permeates the lyrics. The second part of the chorus, "it's all right when your light goes," seems to suggest that there is some peace to be found in the darkness, in accepting the end of life and accepting the human condition with all its vulnerabilities.
