For those of you that may be alarmed that this video contains a lot of details that could get into the wrong hands, all the information discussed in this video is available either online or in books. Nothing classified is being discussed here. The barriers to constructing an actual bomb are not because people don't know the science of how hydrogen bombs work, but because it's very difficult to collect and enrich the type and quantity of fuel needed. In addition, the technology of creating the timers, purifiers, and mechanisms necessary to make the bomb work successfully is not trivial.

The most amazing two things aside from the incredible amount of energy stored in the fuel is the fact that the blast impact from the fission bomb cannot reach the hydrogen fuel before the x rays and the mathematics and scientific calculations it took to realize what is needed to contain the energy of the fission bomb for long enough to cause the compression of the fusion cylinder.

The styrofoam is turned into plasma which emits soft X-rays. The X-rays cause additional heat on the surface of the pusher and cause it to ablate. The ablation causes a phase change on the surface of the pusher from solid to gas causing additional acceleration in addition to the implosion shock waves.

Although I have been watching your videos regularly, I never knew that you had made a video on thermonuclear bombs too. Quite a departure from the placid academic topics such as quantum physics and cosmology.

I am glad that after 1945, these devastating devices have not been used except in the reckless testing of bombs done during the 1960s and 1970s. We Indians are a part of the trijunction of three nuclear powers- China, India and Pakistan, which is a rogue State.

That’s a worrisome prospect.

Experiments. They reach a full understanding of x rays and gamma rays and all the materials involved (individually , of course), and then try to work out how each of them affect the other.

For example, you wish to know how a certain material conducts electricity, for that you must understand conductivity at an atomic and molecular level. And then use that understanding as a reference piece of knowledge to conclude how electricity would behave through another material.

Hopefully I was able to convey the concept I have.

Styrofoam had nothing on "FOGBANK." It's amazing how efficient it is for miniaturization of high yield thermo's, like the W80/88 series. I think someone said it's germanium, and possibly beryllium, doped aerogel that absorbs and re-radiates the x-rays, quickly building their intensity, and turning the secondary radiation case into an x-ray laser plasma resonating chamber to build so much fast x-ray flux, to quickly ablate the outer surface of the sencondary's tamper/pusher, like an inwardly collapsing rocket, and compress the secondary until the plutonium "spark plug" "ignites." Said it's similar to how germanium atoms in doped glass maintain the strength of laser light transmission, in fiber optic cable, and how light builds into a laser in a resonator.

Hey Mr. Ash, I've just finished reading about the "Ripple" Nuclear warhead. It was the very last atmospheric test ever conducted by the United States, and was fundamentally designed to be 99.9% "clean." Apparantly, this bomb used a primary of only 15kt to create a 10 megaton explosion. The concept of the design is very complex, but I'm told that if nuclear testing of very high yield weapons had gone on another year or so, 35megaton warheads weighing only 6000lbs would have been possible. So, I've been reading the comments about how complicated and difficult and expensive it is to create one of these.
And I marvel at the commitment, dedication and determination manifest by those who created them.
And I wonder, why is it, that again and again, humans have generated this level of commitment and focus on destroying each other. But I can't recall a single example of humans showing half as much unity and dedication to improving the human condition.
You would think that this strong a tendency to self destructive behavior would have brought about our extinction as a species long ago. What happened to natural selection and survival of the fittest??

There was a time reading on this stuff I remember hearing tritium being shot into the core. Now we use lithium to be converted into tritium. Tritium having a very short half life would make bomb maintenance very hard. I wonder if that was actually disinformation?

Contrary to conventional wisdom, the majority of the energy in a thermonuclear explosion comes from the fissioning of uranium and plutonium, not from the fusion of tritium and deuterium. The latter reaction serves to increase the amount of fissioning in the former.

Very nice video and almost correct. The styrofoam has nothing to do with the explosion process, though. It's purpose is to be transparent and to keep everything in place. It has much too low density to be of any use.

The plasma and subsequent compression is created in an ablation process from the heating of the casing of the fusion stage.

Also, the neutron absorber between the fission and fusion stages is missing. Its purpose is to keep the neutrons from the fission delayed until the compression is optimal and the plutonium spark plug ignites. If the neutrons were to enter the fusion fuel before optimal compression, they would ignite the fuel too early. That would not be an efficent weapon.

An excellent description of a fusion bomb. I had assumed a fusion bomb was actually a bunch of pellets being fired into a plutonium core at the same moment, with a spherical casing containing hydrogen around it, but this seems much more efficient. I suspect that there are many possible designs for a fusion bomb.

Overall, the more I learn about nukes, the scarier they seem to become. There is an excellent Kurzgesagt video about what would happen if a nuke went off in a city, and the scenario is terrifying.

On a more humanitarian note, I wonder if that lithium deuteride material could have a legitimate application in fusion reactor technology.

@Nick Howatson Usually they introduce it in gaseous form, and serves as an easy way to vary the yield: the more D-T gas they pump in to the core, the more boosting happens, and the higher the yield. As I understand it, they keep the gases in separate cylinders outside the core, and only inject it in right before detonation. The tritium cylinder needs to be replaced on a regular basis, as the tritium slowly decays to helium-3.

if you put a pellet of tritium/deuterium within the center of the uranium/plutonium sphere, you get whats called a "boosted fission bomb".

They do plan on using lithium as the coolant for tokamak-style fusion power reactors, specifically because it can breed tritium in addition to keeping the reactor vessel cool.

It depends on the magnitude or the power of the hydrogen bomb you can’t just say if a hydrogen bomb was dropped in New York City it would destroy everything in a 10 mile radius because if either one gigaton hydrogen bomb was dropped in New York City it would destroy half the state if a 1 Mt hydrogen bomb was dropped in New York City it might destroy everything in a 5 mile radius if a 50 Megaton hydrogen bomb was dropped in New York City it would destroy the entire island of Manhattan and every other borough surrounding it not all hydrogen bombs are the same power just like not all atomic bombs are the same power it depends on how much fish and fuel and fusion fuel is used

Good video but I think that you should have gone into more detail about the foam and it’s purpose. It isn’t styrofoam, for one. If it was, then the US government wouldn’t have had a program to reengineer the foam since they forgot how it was originally made (see FOGBANK). You accurately explained about its partial purpose but the other purpose of the foam is to minutely slow the travel of radiation coming from the fission bomb. The presence of the foam instead of air gives the fusion bomb enough time to reach critical rather than air. With air, the the fusion bomb wouldn’t work properly. I think that you should have used the lingo “reflector” instead of mirror, too. But other than that, great video. It’s probably one of the best on YT.

Another way to look at it is to think about setting off high explosives like TNT. You can't set TNT or C4 off by itself, it is resistant to shock. Blasting cap and even booster charges are needed. Hydrogen bomb uses an atomic bomb for it's blasting cap. This one is bit more energetic than a blasting cap. In 1963 Russia tested their Tsar Bomba. It was deigned to yield 100 megatons. Their scientists were afraid of that much power. They added a damper to reduce energy. Final yield was 50 - 55 megatons. At 100 km (62 miles), you would have suffered flash burns, gamma, x-ray, etc. The vibrations in ground were measured around the globe. Sound and pressure wave from blast circled the Earth 3 times. Tsar Bomba was the biggest ever tested, and 'cleanest' based on yield and radioactivity. A very small Plutonium fission bomb was used to set off the massive Hydrogen (fission) bomb.

I love when people say if all nukes were detonated at once it would kill everything on the planet. Even if all the nukes from the height of the Cold War went off it wouldn’t even equal the destructive power of asteroid that took out the dinosaurs. So sure all people and most complex organisms would be gone but life would survive

Imagine back in the day that you was part of an experiment to witness the explosion not knowing what was going on and then the explosion happens it being so massive and shocking you turn to the person beside you and you can see their skeleton inside their bodies from the x-rays the bomb puts off

Yeah the amount of energy produced from a fission reaction is only about 3-5%. For as effective of a weapon a nuke is for completely decimating an area they are very wasteful in how much fissionsble material you need. Whereas an antimatter weapon is closer to pure engery creation or release because an anti proton will completely eliminate a proton because the two will cancel each other out.

Why not use antimatter to overcome the repulsive properties of the h2 and h3? Like in a fusion reactor. More than likely, you won’t need as much heat,as used in current fusion reactor experiments! Could work!!!

So my first issue is, there aren’t over 10k h bombs in existence. The total world possesion is about 13k. Most of those are smaller tactical bombs, and most of the bigger stuff are still atomic bombs.

I've seen lots of videos that purport to explain a complex subject, and most fail miserably. But this video is great...and I feel that I now have a good (although basic) understanding of how the hydrogen bomb works. Thank you. P.S. I don't think I'll be building my own hydrogen bomb any time soon.
