Titanic
H.O.P.E. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I look at my face in the mirror
And I don't understand
Don't feel like a boy and it's not getting clearer
But I don't feel like a man

I'm seventeen and I'm somebody's son
My dad don't know where I stand
Cause when he looks at me
He don't like what he sees

He don't know what I am

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to H.O.P.E.'s song "Titanic" appear to explore themes of self-identity and the confusion that can arise during the teenage years. The opening lines suggest a sense of disconnection and lack of self-understanding, as the singer looks at themselves in the mirror and feels uncertain about their gender and identity. The lines "Don't feel like a boy and it's not getting clearer / But I don't feel like a man" suggest a sense of being stuck between different stages of development and lacking a clear sense of self.

The second verse adds another layer of complexity to this theme, as the singer reflects on their relationship with their father. The mention of being "somebody's son" suggests a sense of obligation to fulfill a certain role or expectation, which the singer feels they are failing to do. The line "He don't know what I am" suggests a sense of alienation from the father figure and a fear of rejection or disapproval.
