The sisters grew up in a musical family, and began playing instruments from an early age in the cover band Rockinhaim, fronted by their parents, Moti and Donna. The two elder sisters, Este and Danielle, began performing with the pop group "Valli Girls" in 2005. They released a few songs on soundtrack and compilation albums under that name, but left the group shortly after an appearance at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. They formed Haim with younger sister Alana in 2007, but did not seriously consider it a professional career for some years. After Danielle became a successful touring guitarist, first with Jenny Lewis and later with Julian Casablancas, Haim reformed as a full-time operation in 2012.
The group's first release, Forever EP (an EP released as a limited-time download), combined with positive reception at the South by Southwest festival, led to a deal with Polydor Records and a management deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation group in mid-2012. The band began recording material for their first album, Days Are Gone, in sessions between touring dates, including appearances at the Glastonbury Festival. The album charted in the top ten in several countries, including the number-one spot in the UK, and the group had won several "best of" awards by the end of 2013. The group was nominated for Best New Artist at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. Their second album, Something to Tell You, was released in July 2017. Their third album, titled Women in Music Pt. III, was released on June 26, 2020. The group received nominations at the 63rd Grammy awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance (for "The Steps").
In 2024, the sisters blacked out the band's Instagram, seemingly teasing new music by putting "writing... writing... writing..." in the account's bio.
3 AM
HAIM Lyrics

What's up?
Just calling to see if you're still up
But straight to voicemail, uh
Yeah, no biggie, um
If you're up or whatever, just, just hit me up
Why you calling 3 AM
Pushed off the sheets from my bed
'Cause the phone keeps ringing
All I keep thinking is
Have I lost my mind?
But I'm picking up for the last time
Either way, I'm gonna lose
But I just wanna give
I can't stop starin' at it
I just can't resist
I'm floatin' away, keep floatin' away
Floatin' away, floatin' away
I'm floatin' away, keep floatin' away
Floatin' away, floatin' away
Now you're calling, 3 AM
My head is spinning
Pushed off the sheets from my bed
'Cause the phone keeps ringing
All I keep thinking is
Have I lost my mind?
But I'm picking up for the last time
(What are you doing?)
You and I don't have to meet
But it's fun to think we could
On the screen and in my jeans
Just make me feel good
I'm floatin' away, keep floatin' away
I'm floatin' away, floatin' away
I'm floatin' away, keep floatin' away
Floatin' away, keep floatin' away
Now you're calling, 3 AM
My head is spinning
Pushed off the sheets from my bed
'Cause the phone keeps ringing
All I keep thinking is
Have I lost my mind?
But I'm picking up for the last time
It's 3 AM
(Hey, what's up?) Now you're calling, 3 AM
(Hi, I promised myself I wouldn't call again, but, uh) now you're calling
(Just lookin' through all these photos on my phone) now you're calling, 3 AM
Now you're calling, 3 AM
The song "3 AM" by Haim portrays the feelings of confusion and longing that one feels when they receive a late-night call from someone they have feelings for. The opening lines suggest that the singer is calling to check if the other person is still awake, but they get sent straight to voicemail. Despite this, the singer urges the other person to call them back if they are awake. The chorus of the song revolves around the idea of losing one's mind, yet being unable to resist the temptation of picking up the phone. The lyrics depict the need to give in to the desire to connect with the other person, regardless of the emotional costs.
As the song progresses, the singer mentions how they don't need to meet the other person, but the idea of doing so is fun to entertain. This exemplifies how some people may find comfort in the thought of being desired by someone they admire. Additionally, the lyrics suggest that this desire can be self-destructive and can cause a loss of clarity in one's mind. The phrase "floating away" is repeated throughout the song, indicating a desire to escape from reality.
Overall, the song "3 AM" conveys how late-night calls can be both melancholic and comforting. The lyrics exhibit a combination of emotions that pull the listener in and make them empathize with the singer.
