The sisters grew up in a musical family, and began playing instruments from an early age in the cover band Rockinhaim, fronted by their parents, Moti and Donna. The two elder sisters, Este and Danielle, began performing with the pop group "Valli Girls" in 2005. They released a few songs on soundtrack and compilation albums under that name, but left the group shortly after an appearance at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. They formed Haim with younger sister Alana in 2007, but did not seriously consider it a professional career for some years. After Danielle became a successful touring guitarist, first with Jenny Lewis and later with Julian Casablancas, Haim reformed as a full-time operation in 2012.
The group's first release, Forever EP (an EP released as a limited-time download), combined with positive reception at the South by Southwest festival, led to a deal with Polydor Records and a management deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation group in mid-2012. The band began recording material for their first album, Days Are Gone, in sessions between touring dates, including appearances at the Glastonbury Festival. The album charted in the top ten in several countries, including the number-one spot in the UK, and the group had won several "best of" awards by the end of 2013. The group was nominated for Best New Artist at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. Their second album, Something to Tell You, was released in July 2017. Their third album, titled Women in Music Pt. III, was released on June 26, 2020. The group received nominations at the 63rd Grammy awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance (for "The Steps").
In 2024, the sisters blacked out the band's Instagram, seemingly teasing new music by putting "writing... writing... writing..." in the account's bio.

Just calling to see if you're still up
But straight to voicemail, uh
Yeah, no biggy
Um, if you′re up or whatever just, just hit me up, um
Now you're calling
3 a.m., my head is spinningPushed off the sheets from my bed
'Cause the phone keeps ringing
All I keep thinking is have I lost my mind?
But I′m picking up for the last time
Either way I′m gonna lose
But I just wanna give
I just can't stop staring at it
I just can′t resist
I'm floating away
Keep floating away
Floating away, floating away
I′m floating away
Keep floating away
Floating away, floating away
Now you're calling
3 a.m., my head is spinning
Pushed off the sheets from my bed
′Cause the phone keeps ringing
All I keep thinking is have I lost my mind?
But I'm picking up for the last time
You and I don't have to meet
But it′s fun to think we could, mm
Just make me feel good
I′m floating away
Keep floating away
Floating away, floating away
I'm floating away
Keep floating away
Floating away, floating away
Now you′re calling
3 a.m., my head is spinning
Pushed off the sheets from my bed
'Cause the phone keeps ringing
All I keep thinking is have I lost my mind?
But I′m picking up for the last time
It's 3 a.m.
Now you′re calling, 3 a.m. (hey, what's up?)
Now you're calling, 3 a.m. (hi, I promised myself I wouldn′t call again, but)
Now you′re calling, 3 a.m. (looking through all these photos in my phone)
Now you're calling, 3 a.m.
Now you′re calling, 3 a.m.
The lyrics to HAIM's song "3am" depict a late-night phone call, specifically at the ungodly hour of 3 a.m. The song begins with a voicemail from the singer, checking if the other person is still awake and asking them to get in touch. However, when the other person finally calls, it becomes clear that this is a pattern, as indicated by the repetition of the phrase "now you're calling." The singer's head is spinning, and they are pushed off their bed to answer the persistent ringing phone.
The lyrics express the internal struggle the singer is facing. They acknowledge that no matter what they do, they will end up losing. They have the desire to give in to the temptation of answering the call and engaging in whatever connection this late-night encounter may bring. The line "I just can't stop staring at it, I just can't resist" suggests that they are drawn to the allure and excitement of this unpredictable interaction.
The repeated phrase "floating away" symbolizes a detachment from reality. The singer is willing to be transported, mentally and emotionally, by this late-night phone call. It seems that there is a longing for the temporary escape and thrill that this connection brings, even if it may not lead to anything substantial.
The lyrics continue to emphasize the late-night nature of the communication, highlighting the singer's bewildered state of mind. They question whether they have lost their sanity, but despite their reservations, they answer the call one last time.
Overall, "3am" portrays the inner conflict and emotional vulnerability of a late-night phone call that both entices and confuses the singer.
