The sisters grew up in a musical family, and began playing instruments from an early age in the cover band Rockinhaim, fronted by their parents, Moti and Donna. The two elder sisters, Este and Danielle, began performing with the pop group "Valli Girls" in 2005. They released a few songs on soundtrack and compilation albums under that name, but left the group shortly after an appearance at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. They formed Haim with younger sister Alana in 2007, but did not seriously consider it a professional career for some years. After Danielle became a successful touring guitarist, first with Jenny Lewis and later with Julian Casablancas, Haim reformed as a full-time operation in 2012.
The group's first release, Forever (an EP released as a limited-time download), combined with positive reception at the South by Southwest festival, led to a deal with Polydor Records and a management deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation group in mid-2012. The band began recording material for their first album, Days Are Gone, in sessions between touring dates, including appearances at the Glastonbury Festival. The album charted in the top ten in several countries, including the number-one spot in the UK, and the group had won several "best of" awards by the end of 2013. The group was nominated for Best New Artist at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. Their second album, Something to Tell You, was released in July 2017. Their third album, titled Women in Music Pt. III, was released on June 26, 2020. The group received nominations at the 63rd Grammy awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance (for "The Steps").

I say no, no, no, no, I'm done I'm done
I never wanna see you again with the beating of my heart witness
I say no, no, no, no, I'm done I'm done
I wanna get back to
I wanna get back to everything I had
What am I do to now
But in my mind I keep seeing you, seeing me
And how good we used to be, used to be, used to be, used to be, used to be
I keep seeing it, seeing me
And how good we used to be, used to be, used to be, used to be, used to be
And now I'm finding I cannot deal with this
Going crazy wanna go leave you want in
Say you wanna work this out boy
Don't need to beg cause you'll never get it again
'Cause I'm better off this time this time
No not baby not this time around
Oh I'm better off this time, this time, not this time
'Cause I found out yeah, I found out now
Forgiveness is that all you want from me
I won't fall, into the arms of the one who to know me
Its getting too dark for me to see
So I keep flashing back to when we met
We were better then, better then, better then, better then
I held you I didn't have to share it then
Better then better then better then better the
Now my mind is taking me back to this
Too much time to think about what it is
What made us fall apart
Well don't need to beg Cause you'll never get it again
'Cause I'm better off this time, this time
No no no not this time around
Oh I'm better off this time, this time
'Cause I found out you yeah I found out now
I'm better off this time this time
No baby not this time around
Oh I'm better off this time, this time, this time
'Cause I found out you I found out now
Oh you know I'm better off this time, better off this time
Oh you know I'm better off this time, better off this time
Oh you know I'm better off this time,
'Cause I found out, I found out now
Oh you know I'm better off this time, better off this time
Oh you know I'm better off this time, better off this time
Oh you know I'm better off this time,
'Cause I found out, I found out now
The song "Better Off" by HAIM is a breakup song where the singer is trying to move on from a relationship that has ended. The lyrics suggest that she has been hurt deeply by the person she's singing to, and she's done with the relationship. When the singer sings, "I never wanna see you again with the beating of my heart witness," it's a declaration that she's done with the relationship and that it has hurt her deeply. The repeated phrase, "I say no, no, no, no, I'm done I'm done," further emphasize this point.
The next verse seems to suggest that the singer wants to get back to how things were before they met and that the person she's singing to has messed things up. She's struggling to let go of the good times they had together, even though it's clear that they're over. The chorus is an affirmation that she is better off without this person, and she has found out the truth about them. She refuses to forgive or fall into the arms of someone who doesn't truly know her. The lyrics "Oh you know I'm better off this time" repeat several times, emphasizing the singer's newfound confidence and strength in moving on.
