Gasoline
HAIM Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You took me back but you shouldn't have
Now it's your fault if I mess around
I took a drag but I shouldn't have
Now I'm coughing up like I've never smoked a pack

Gasoline, pretty please
I want to get off but you're such a tease
Throw the keys back to me
Go on and kick off your boots
In the passenger seat

I get sad, you know I get sad
And I can't look past what I'm sad about
You did me bad (did me bad, did me bad)
And I did it back (did it back, did it back)
You needed ass, well, what's wrong with that?

Gasoline (gasoline)
Pretty please (pretty please)
I want to get off (gasoline)
But you're such a tease
Throw the keys (throw the keys)
Back to me (back to me)
Go on and kick off your boots (gasoline)
In the passenger's seat

(Strike a match, strike a match, watch it blow)
We're watching the sunrise from the kitchen counter
(Want you bad, want you bad, don't you know?)
When you're lying between my legs, it doesn't matter
(Strike a match, strike a match, watch it blow)
You say you want to go slower but I want to go faster
(I want you bad, want you bad)
Faster and faster

Gasoline, pretty please
I want to get off but you're such a tease

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in HAIM's song Gasoline is a reflection of a tumultuous relationship. The singer is torn between her love for her partner and her need for independence. The opening lyrics, "You took me back, But you shouldn't have, Now it's your fault, If I mess around" suggests that the singer feels guilty for returning to a failed relationship, and now that she is back, she may stray at any moment, making it her partner's fault. She then mentions taking a drag, which could be a literal reference to smoking or a metaphor for succumbing to temptation. She coughs up smoke, which could be a reference to the negative repercussions that come with indulging bad habits.

The chorus, "Gasoline, Pretty please, I wanna get off, But you're such a tease" suggests that though the singer wants to break away from the toxic relationship, she is having a hard time doing so because her partner keeps teasing her. The second verse goes on to explain that she gets sad, and she can't look past what she's sad about. This could be a reference to the reason why she returned to the relationship in the first place. The bridge paints a picture of a sweet moment between the singer and her partner, watching the sunrise together, but then the chorus comes in and reminds us that she is still struggling to leave.

@RobertLindabury

This is better than the album version. The mix is better. The bass being louder is so much better because that's some awesome bass line.

@christophersperanza1226

Totally agree, this is the perfect tempo for the song too

@sweetcherrieheart

The vocals are also more intense, I think in the album version Danielle sings softer, but here it just hits different!

@Yallboots

Yeah the studio drums are a bit harsh.

@Modulater83

Agreed, bringing the bass out more as well as Alana's harmony on the chorus sounds much better.

@megalon73
