The sisters grew up in a musical family, and began playing instruments from an early age in the cover band Rockinhaim, fronted by their parents, Moti and Donna. The two elder sisters, Este and Danielle, began performing with the pop group "Valli Girls" in 2005. They released a few songs on soundtrack and compilation albums under that name, but left the group shortly after an appearance at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. They formed Haim with younger sister Alana in 2007, but did not seriously consider it a professional career for some years. After Danielle became a successful touring guitarist, first with Jenny Lewis and later with Julian Casablancas, Haim reformed as a full-time operation in 2012.
The group's first release, Forever EP (an EP released as a limited-time download), combined with positive reception at the South by Southwest festival, led to a deal with Polydor Records and a management deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation group in mid-2012. The band began recording material for their first album, Days Are Gone, in sessions between touring dates, including appearances at the Glastonbury Festival. The album charted in the top ten in several countries, including the number-one spot in the UK, and the group had won several "best of" awards by the end of 2013. The group was nominated for Best New Artist at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. Their second album, Something to Tell You, was released in July 2017. Their third album, titled Women in Music Pt. III, was released on June 26, 2020. The group received nominations at the 63rd Grammy awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance (for "The Steps").
In 2024, the sisters blacked out the band's Instagram, seemingly teasing new music by putting "writing... writing... writing..." in the account's bio.

But you lead me to no other line, no other line
Eyes wide when you walked through the door, you
Made your way across the floor
All of the girls try that dance, try that dance
No, no, no, no
See I'm not afraid no more(I'm not afraid no more)
To turn you away no more
(Turn you away no more)
To turn you away, to turn you away
'Cause my honey and I, yeah yeah
My honey and I, honey and I, honey and I
D-doing just fine, yeah
Honey and I (honey and I)
My honey and I , honey and I, honey and I
D-doing just fine, yeah
Oh, no, no, no
I don't love you just because
Love wasn't what I thought it once was
But I thought it once was
Telling each other everything
Picking up your wedding rings
No, now I know and now I see
I'm not afraid no more
No no no no no no
So why are you always trying to stay at home?
(Why are you staying there?)
This all can't be played alone
(This all can't be played alone)
My honey and I, yeah yeah
My honey and I, honey and I, honey and I
D-doing just fine, yeah
Honey and I (honey and I)
My honey and I, honey and I, honey and I
D-doing just fine, yeah
Oh oh (oh oh)
Ah ah yeah
My my my honey and I
Oh, no, no, no
See I'm not afraid no more
No, to turn you away no more
To turn you away
'Cause my
Honey and I,
Honey and I, honey and I, honey and I
D-doing just fine, yeah
D-doing just fine, yeah
D-doing just fine, yeah
D-doing just fine, yeah
The song Honey & I by HAIM talks about the aftermath of a failed relationship. The singer is saying goodbye to their partner but acknowledges that there is nothing good about goodbyes. However, the partner did not give them any other choice but to leave. In the first verse, the singer describes their partner's entrance and how they catch everyone's eye. But in the chorus, they say they are not afraid anymore to let them go, and they are doing just fine without them.
In the second verse, the singer admits to their misconceptions about love. They thought it was about telling each other everything and picking up wedding rings. But now they realize that love wasn't what they thought it once was. They question their partner's motives, wondering why they are always trying to stay at home when their love was meant to be played with. The chorus is then repeated, with the singer talking about how they are doing just fine without their partner.
The song has a simple structure, with a repetitive chorus that emphasizes the singer's resolve to move on. The use of the phrase "honey and I" throughout the song creates a sense of comfort and solidarity in the singer's decision. HAIM's signature sound, with their harmonized vocals and guitar-heavy production, adds emotional depth to the lyrics. Overall, Honey & I is a relatable breakup song that speaks to the pain of letting go but also the strength that comes with it.

Goodnight, I know there's nothing good in goodbye
Leaving someone behind is always tough
But you lead me to no other line, no other line
You were the only one for me
Eyes wide when you walked through the door, you
I was surprised to see you
Made your way across the floor
You walked towards me gracefully
All of the girls try that dance, try that dance
Other girls try to get your attention as well
See I'm not afraid no more
I'm not scared anymore
(I'm not afraid no more)
Fear is no longer holding me back
To turn you away no more
I can't ignore you anymore
(Turn you away no more)
I can't keep running away from you
To turn you away, to turn you away
To reject or push you away
'Cause my honey and I, yeah yeah
Me and my lover are happy together
D-doing just fine, yeah
We are doing perfectly fine
Oh, no, no, no

No, now I know and now I see
But now I understand things better
So why are you always trying to stay at home?
Why are you avoiding me?
(Why are you staying there?)
What's keeping you from leaving the house?
