The Steps
HAIM Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So baby, when I'm near you
You can't feel me, I'm lightnin'
You used to come by
And sit down by my side
You would come in close
Take off all my clothes

Every time I think that I've been takin' the steps
You end up mad at me for makin' a mess
I can't understand, why you don't understand me
Baby
And every day I wake up and I make money for myself
And though we share a bed
You know that I don't need your help
Do you understand?
You don't understand me
Baby

All the ivy
Is growing sideways
You won't stop it
'Til it covers all of our place

Every time I think that I've been takin' the steps
You end up mad at me for makin' a mess
I can't understand, why you don't understand me
Baby
And every day I wake up and I make money for myself
And though we share a bed
You know that I don't need your help
Do you understand?
You don't understand me
Baby

If I go right
And you go left
Hey, I know we'll meet up again

And if you go left
And I go right
Hey, maybe that's just life sometimes

Every time I think that I've been takin' the steps
You end up mad at me for makin' a mess
I can't understand, why you don't understand me
Baby
And every day I wake up and I make money for myself
And though we share a bed
You know that I don't need your help
Do you understand?
You don't understand me
Baby

Overall Meaning

The opening of the song 'The Steps' by HAIM is very evocative and poetic. The singer is presumably telling their lover that they are electrifying, but they cannot physically feel them. The next few lines hint at a previous sexual relationship, but the crux of the song lies in the chorus. The singer claims that every time they believe they are taking steps forward in their relationship, their lover becomes angry with them. They can't understand why they are so misunderstood.

The Steps, a Grammy nominated song from an Album of the Year nominated album, love that.

@robertlonsdale1015

They need to win Album of Year. There is not a bad or even mediocre song on the entire album!

@veronikawadhwa998

@dioalfonso

@@robertlonsdale1015 they totally deserve to win, but i feel they are gonna' give it to a more mainstream artist like Taylor Swift or Dua Lipa, but wimpiii is still the best album of the year, no doubt about that.
