@David Koloc I´ve addressed the silence = violence before, so I´ll just copy paste my answer:

"I agree that malice can be involved and that specific usages can be counterproductive. For example when the right decided to redefine what critical race theory is 50 years after it was established, just so that they could be outraged at it. That‘s pretty bad.

But deliberately using a word in an unexpected way to create attention for your cause and rally, if you want to provoke people to ask further questions and engage with your ideas, that‘s a pretty damn good use of language. Yet somehow good ol‘ Bill got his panties in a twist over “silence = violence“, even though his own pic showed a protester holding a sign. I guess that didn‘t make it obvious enough to him what was going on there."

Now if left wing politicians and left wing media started losing their shit about this new wave of violence, simply because everyone decided to run with "silence = violence" since they thought it would rile up their base against those "violent" republicans (like the right did with CRT), then I´d be on your side. But that hasn´t happened.

And you noticed this, too. When you said "when lawyers, judges, police, legislators or doctors begin using the word that way, [...] let us know", you admitted that the word hadn´t actually changed its meaning. In fact, that protest sign would be pretty unspectacular if it had (imagine it read "punching is violence", who´d give a damn about that?).

But that means there´s nothing to get angry about, even for Bill. Even if you for some reason decide to believe that these protesters aren´t trying to get attention, but sincerely believe "silence = violence", there´s no reason to be angry. I´m not angry at Dave Rubin for "attempting to redefine Occam´s Razor" when he says it means "everything that can go wrong, will". I just laugh my ass off.

My goodbye example shows, that words can completely lose their original meaning. It only follows, that meanings can also erode over time. Suddenly a hero is just someone who inspires you and makes you want to be better (look at that, this could definitely apply to your kids and it sounds like a line from a Captain America movie).

Or phobia as a suffix can apply to fear adjacent reactions too, such as disgust and contempt, which are usually heavily intermingled with actual fear (ask someone who´s arachnophobic if Spiders disgust them and if they like them or not - we all know the answers) and have similar "tells".

Seriously, who really knows whether a racist is really exclusively motivated by bitterness and anger or if he´s actually afraid too. Afraid of losing his job to immigrants, afraid of becoming a minority and losing social power and standing, afraid of the culture he identifies with "losing" and getting eroded. So really it´s far more useful to adopt an open understanding of the word and that´s just what language is all about.

@Morty Sanchez Final reply:

"For the most traditional societies of humans, those still living in bands or early tribes, the number one cause of death of those who make it to adulthood is murder."

Earlier civilizations had access to weapons that relied more on the physical strength of the user, such as swords, spears and bows. This put armed women and weak men at a disadvantage against anyone stronger than them. Firearms put women and weak men on equal footing with strong men because it doesn't require physical strength to be effective with a firearm.

“They say God made man, but Sam Colt made them equal.”

"When there is mutual fear, men think twice before they make aggression upon one another." - Hermocrates

"And people like you will do one of two things: if the victim did anything more than 100% passive pacifism, or wasnt caught 100% of guard, then the murder is justified."

Your mind works in reverse, your thinking is completely backwards. If someone chases down and lunges at someone they are the aggressor, and the victim being less than 100% pacifistic is entirely justified and makes their killing of the lunger not a murder. Murder is the unlawful killing of a human by another human with premeditation. There is no premeditation when responding to someone chasing down and lunging at you.

"Tamir Rice's killer and John Crawford's killer didnt hear your finger wag buddy."

I haven't looked at the John Crawford case, but I already said the cop who killed Tamir Rice should be in prison (and you completely ignored the point I made about how more white kids are killed by cops for holding toy guns than black kids). You ignore everything I say that doesn't fit the role you've assigned to me in that warped brain of yours.

"Always a reason...which in effect removes the right to self defense from the victim!
So your world view isnt even consistent on its face..."

Garbled nonsense. If you chase someone and lunge at them you're not defending yourself. If you threaten to kill someone you justify them taking action against you. If you tell someone to shoot you then you're a hypocrite to complain if they do it.

"Except we know how it will really play out: white male conservatives get to kill."

Andrew Coffee and Kenneth Walker are black males and they also got to kill in self-defense. I'm entirely on their side too. If I tried to kill you, you'd also be justified in killing me in self-defense despite you being a deranged and racist leftist.

"Not only do you remove the duty to deescalate for them, you add the right to escalate.
To initiate, pursue, and escalate.
And use any attempt from the victim to defend themselves as justification for the killer."

That's what you have done. Rosenbaum threatened to kill Kyle which was the initiation of a threat, he hid, ambushed and then pursued Kyle who was walking down the sidewalk, and then he escalated by lunging at him. The victim has the right to escalate to the level of violence of their attacker. When Rosenbaum lunged at Kyle he justified Kyle retaliating against him with force. You've offered nothing to prove Kyle was the inital attacker, the best you can come up with is Kyle walked past a hiding Rosenbaum after Rosenbaum had already threatened to kill him.

"You are literally trying to drag our society back not just to preindustrial times, but to the times at the before/ at the begining of agriculture."

Foolish statement. As explained above firearms put women and weak men on equal footing with strong men, a situation that never existed before industrialization.

"Youve convinced me of nothing but your own ability to do mental gymnastics to justify a bloody, murderous pre-society, state of nature, - purge type existence."

All projection on your part. You're fine with Rosenbaum threatening to kill Kyle, lying in wait for Kyle to pass by, and then chase down and lunge at him all without Kyle being permitted to defend himself. That's what the video evidence shows and you're doing mental backflips to justify your backwards thinking.

"Hotheads, sociopaths and psychopaths rejoice."

That's exactly what you are. Every civilization has upheld the principle of self-defense and you want it trampled upon. You are a dishonest, delusional fool who refuses to come to terms with the fact that Rosenbaum threatened to kill Kyle long before Kyle did anything that even hints at a provocation. You are so desperate to believe your insane narrative that a suicidal pedophile rapist and arsonist was an innocent victim of a person providing medical care and defending an innocent person's property during a riot in which Rosenbaum was an active rioter.

The fact that you repeatedly ignore that Rosenbaum threatened to kill Kyle and told Kyle to shoot him proves beyond any doubt that you are a dishonest and dishonorable person arguing in bad faith.

Final reply: you havnt convinced me of anything.

You said "an armed society is a polite society"

False

For the most traditional societies of humans, those still living in bands or early tribes, the number one cause of death of those who make it to adulthood is murder.

Hotheads, sociopaths, psychopaths will always find an excuse to kill and to justify it.

And people like you will do one of two things: if the victim did anything more than 100% passive pacifism, or wasnt caught 100% of guard, then the murder is justified.

you see the angle of the hand...the moonlight in his eyes...murder justified! Huzzah!

Otherwise...maybe a few will wag a finger at a killer, but mostly ignore it. A few condemnation videos...but on the whole ignored.
Tamir Rice's killer and John Crawford's killer didnt hear your finger wag buddy.

Always a reason...which in effect removes the right to self defense from the victim!

No.

Youve convinced me of nothing but your own ability to do mental gymnastics to justify a bloody, murderous pre-society, state of nature, - purge type existence.
Hotheads, sociopaths and psychopaths rejoice.

@Evey C
Im curious about something. Lets try this, do you agree with the following statements:

Industrial and agricultural activity release their byproduct CO2 into the atmosphere.

CO2 is a green house gas.

Measured CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere have increased, so has the measured temperature.

Human activity is measurably increasing the temperature of the Earth.

This will lead to the melting of the polar ice caps and a rise in sea levels; more extreme weather including droughts and floods, and bleaching of coral reefs and loss of other habitats leading to mass extinction.

Do you agree or disagree?

...

1) gender and biological sex are 2 different things
2) imposing on a biological male that they are trans-female is a better analogy for what you're doing, not for what I am doing.
You do not know someone else's subjective life experience, only an arrogant fool would believe they could.

"Science defines two genders" is a red flag; its normally uttered by religious and political ideologues who normally oppose science.

Thats why I ask your opinion on anthropogenic climate change.

I agree with 80% of the things he said. It doesn’t need to be 100%. Respect to Bill Maher.

JVRaines

Agreed. He has said some monumentally stupid things, but the vast majority of his writing resonates with me.

CC33CC

Agree. I don't agree with everything he says. But, I have a tremendous amount of respect for him. There's obviously a lot of thought and logic in what says. Unlike the idiots on CNN, MSNBC, or The View.

B Kaley

I agree with 100% of what he says and I'm not even a democrat.

Scott Lewis

@Deborah Allison I agree. Why do they have to drag him up all the time? Move on already

Ant Grecco

@Slacker Man How many times does the "slippery slope argument" have to become reality before you start learning? EVERY SINGLE ONE that I've heard in the past 20 years has come true. Normalizing pedophilia, letting killers out of jail, repealing anti discrimination laws, etc etc etc... You are clinically delusional.

I find it amazing that some people feel that they have the right to go through life and never be offended by anyone over anything.
And even more baffling is that they have that right but you don't.

@Quadrant14 I have said that to a few snowflake type, it seem to kinda short circuit their brain, they get a very puzzled look on their face and usually don't have anything else to say. I'll even stand there and stare at them giving them plenty of time, but they just can't speak

Quadrant14

oh damm, "I am offended that you are offended." I put that on a T shirt and walk around Australia with it, and hell does it give the shits to the woke mob
