The Wire
H A I M Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know I'm bad at communication, it's the hardest thing for me to do
And it's said, it's the most important part that relationships will go through
And I'd give it all away just so I could say that
I know I know I know I know that you're gonna be OK anyway

You know there's no rhyme or reason for the way you turned out to be
I didn't go and try to change my mind. not intentionally
I know it's hard to hear me say it but I can't bear to stay and
I just know I know I know I know that you're gonna be OK anyway

Always keep your heart locked tight, don't let your mind retire, oh
But I just couldn't take it, I tried hard not to fake it
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire
It felt great, it felt right, oh
But I fumbled him when I came down to the wire
It felt great, it felt right, oh
But I fumbled him when I came down to the wire

Does your imagination try to make you what you wanted to be
Because I'm sorry I do what I did, but it came naturally
And I gave it all away just so I could say that
Well I know I know I know I know that you're gonna be OK anyway

Well I try to keep myself together, after all the opportunities
I try to stay true to you and try to do what you wanted for me
And I'd give it all away just to hear you say that
Well I know I know I know I know that you're gonna be okay anyway

Always keep your heart locked tight, don't let your mind retire, oh
But I just couldn't take it, I tried hard not to fake it
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire
It felt great, it felt right, oh
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire
It felt great, it felt right, oh
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire
Ooh yeah

Always keep your heart locked tight, don't let your mind retire
Always keep your heart locked tight, don't let your mind retire, oh
But I just couldn't take it, I tried hard not to fake it
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire
But I just couldn't take it, I tried hard not to fake it
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire
It felt great, it felt right, oh
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire
It felt great, it felt right, oh
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire
It felt great, it felt right, oh
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire
It felt right, oh
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire
Ooh yeah yeah yeah yeah
No no no no
It felt right
It felt right
It felt right

No no no no
But I fumbled and when I came down to the wire

Overall Meaning

In "The Wire," HAIM's lead singer expresses that she struggles with communication and the difficulty it poses in her relationships. However, she also recognizes that this is a crucial component of a successful relationship. The song's refrain, "And I'd give it all away just so I could say that/I know that you're gonna be okay anyway," suggests that the singer is aware of her inadequacies in communication and is willing to sacrifice anything to make sure her loved one is safe and happy. The chorus advises the listener to "keep your heart locked tight" and not give in to negative thoughts.

The second verse discusses the idea that people are shaped by their own experiences, and the singer acknowledges that she didn't purposely change her mind about the relationship. She also apologizes for her part in the situation but admits that her actions come naturally to her. The bridge of the song addresses the power of imagination in shaping our desires, but the singer is ultimately sorry for her mistakes and hopes for forgiveness.

Overall, "The Wire" is a vulnerable and emotional song that explores the difficulties of communication in relationships and the lengths people will go to keep their loved ones safe.

@zclindy

I worked in production on this music video, and I gotta say, after 17 hours of listening to this song non-stop, I wasn't able to get it out of my head for about 2 weeks after.

@jaiblue25

I can imagine. But that is a good thing considering it is a great band. Far worse music to have up in there.

@strawwberryyy

I can 100% imagine

@VoodooChickenWire

Doesn't that happen with any song?

@Tony_Kaku

I feel the same but did not work on production of this video.

@notsure1350

Same, man

It'll always remind me of when I didn't have a car and had to bike everywhere. I first discovered Haim back then and listened to this song, amongst their others, while biking and it will always draw me back to the streets roadways, and bike paths of those many places. I remember the wind in my hair, the strain in my legs, and the rhythm of these fantastic songs.
