Questions
Hagen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you believe in antichrist do you believe in God
Do you consider your pen as your sword or do you require blood
Is love always for sale is money the tie that binds
Would you sell your soul for fame or go down for the secrets divine
I would sell my soul for:

Satan or Jesus is it really all the same
Whatever we believe in we continue to kill in vain

Do you wanna be true to yourself or cheat and lie to get by
Do you drive in the fast lane never slowing down to ask why
Why are we living tell me what's the deal
Is this heaven or hell I don't know what to feel
Right now I feel like:very:

The good against the evil I don't know which way to choose
Satan or Jesus I get so confused

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hagen's song Questions pose a series of philosophical and moral inquiries. The first four lines ask the listener to consider their beliefs on religion, personal values, and what they would be willing to sacrifice to achieve their goals. The subsequent lines question whether people truly live by their principles or if they are willing to compromise them to get ahead in life. The song concludes with a lament on the state of the world, wondering if life is a constant struggle between good and evil and if people can ever truly know which side they fall on.

Overall, the song explores themes of morality, belief, and self-reflection. It challenges the listener to examine their own worldview and consider the consequences of their actions. The lyrics also suggest a sense of confusion and uncertainty, indicating that the songwriter may be struggling to find their own place in the world amidst these complex and often conflicting ideas.

A CHALLENGE FOR THE ACTOR is a very fine book, loaded with insight as well as good old theatrical common sense. Currently reading Jared Brown's THE FABULOUS LUNTS, a dual biography of Alfred Lunt & Lynn Fontanne. They hired Uta Hagen when she was 18 to play Nina in their production of Chekhov's THE SEAGULL. Fascinating reading!

Uta was a great actress. I saw her on Broadway in "Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolff?". A powerhouse performance.

This is really good stuff and the last exercise is very good. Mamet's book is mostly bunk. Anyone who thinks that Jimmy Stewart was a good actor should look at what Paul Newman did in Mamet's script The Verdict. That fine performance is what Hagen is talking about here--transference.

This is one teacher who could ACT!! Who could back up everything she taught. Amazing talent.

I eat up everything this woman says. I just ordered her "Challenge for the Actor" book on eBay -- I can't wait to read it!

As well Uta always thought behavior was found by physical enviroment or activities, she never understood motivation over style or words.

i am intrigued by the book and author you speek of. But, what concerns me is the question of 'mechanical' acting. It would be ignorance to dismiss the teachings of Acting as a artform, such of those of Stanislavsky and the concept Uta Hagen is trying to teach.
