Relax / Divide
Hail the Sun Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every time that you leave my house
I fear that your truck flips, or crashes
I'm always assuming the worst
It's not healthy to be so fucking anxious and desperate
My train of thought always derails

All is calm at the moment
Nothing's wrong as of now
But my heart drops when the telephone rings
I'm not sure you're the one.
Do you think that it's time to let our lives divide?

I'll reflect where we met
Back at the restaurant where we worked
Remember our booth in the back room?
Things were much simpler then
Post college daydreams on Ivy Street
Learning your curves in the bed

All is calm at the moment
Nothing's wrong as of now
But my heart drops when the telephone rings

I'm not sure you're the one.
If you think that it's time then let our lives divide

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hail the Sun's song "Relax / Divide" express the singer's anxious fears and uncertainties about the future of their relationship. The opening lines describe the singer's persistent anxiety whenever their partner leaves their home, constantly worrying about their safety and the possibility of something going wrong. The singer admits that this level of anxiety is not healthy, but they cannot seem to break free from these thoughts.

The second verse finds the singer reflecting on the past, recalling memories of a simpler time when they first met at a restaurant and had post-college daydreams together. However, despite these fond memories, the singer's doubts and uncertainties about their relationship persist. They wonder if it's time to "let our lives divide," suggesting that they may be considering a breakup or separation.

Throughout the song, the tone is one of melancholy and uncertainty. The music adds to this feeling, with its brooding and introspective guitar lines and the singer's haunting vocals. Overall, the song seems to be about the difficulty of moving on from a past relationship and facing the uncertainty of the future.

when i saw these guys in concert, the lead singer walked away from the drums and walked out toward the crowd. He asked everyone is they're with someone they love. Most of the place cheered. Then he said: well, you most likely won't be together forever....and they played this song

I recently came back in contact with this song, and I've been going through a very HARD breakup with someone I love so much, it kills me to be without her right now.. and we met working at a restaurant, and had worked in 3 different restaurants together. I used to sit with her while she rolled silverware and folded pizza boxes. and how our relationship came about so organically.. when I heard this for the first time a couple nights ago, walking home. I fell on the sidewalk and balled so hard at the middle of the song.. had to share,.. love these dudes
