When I was younger I was a "Not like other girls" girl. I've gotten older and realized that there's nothing wrong with liking more 'girly' things. "Not like other girls" phases happen because society teaches us that masculine things are better and should be valued above more feminine ones when there's nothing wrong with liking either one. This isn't intended to be against more masculine women, if you're not hurting anyone like what you like.

I was bullied by girls as a teen, so I developed a lot of internalized misogyny and I liked that message of "not being like other girls". It was really popular in early 2000s movies. I had a couple of men tell me that and I thought it was a compliment. It took me years to realize that was internalized misogyny. It's unbelievable how much impact the media we consume has in our lives growing up. And I don't think we talk about this enough.

Instead of saying "you're not like..." or "you're different from...", someone could just say "I like how you..." or "you're really good at...". And I'm not saying this as specifically something a guy trying to date a girl should think about, I think everyone should approach compliments this way. Because, using others to bolster oneself or another, just feels disingenuous and can do more harm to someone's confidence, in the long run.

People don't get this song. The point isn't that he called her unique, it's that he insulted her entire gender which she is proud of. She sees women as smart, powerful, strong etc. And it's insulting to her when he says she's not like them

Well it's kind of dumb to force yourself to avoid certain things or to allow society to deny them to you because of your sex and then grow up and be thankful of that.
It's like a slave saying thank you to their master because at least they have something to eat.
There is nothing wrong with liking what western society calls feminine treats or manners. There's everything wrong with not realizing it's imposed since you are born and that behaving like you are somehow more of a girl than those who defy gender it's absurd.
