Just did the math, you'd need around 1,000 weekly paychecks to be able to afford a house where I live at around minimum wage. Which means he would be around 60 years old or so if he were to put around half of every paycheck into savings to buy a house (which would mean no interest). Statistically his parents would not be alive by then.

@Undefined when this first aired, that house was probably worth $100k-200k, but most likely $100k-150k giving the age. Affordable housing/starter homes were easier to come by back then. At the time, minimum wage was about $5.15, but there were child labor laws in place preventing minors from working full time. This was also right before the housing bubble bursted, so they were giving home loans to just about anyone because what’s the risk? The profit is in buyers who CANT afford it. Besides, banks would just sell off the loan anyway, so it wasn’t their risk.

Now then, I actually worked a similar job as Lois back in those days. I left a $8.15/hr grocery cashier job in 2002, for something very similar in the same town on the same road for $7/hr. After four years, I was making $8.45/hr. We had a similar sized home, though nicer because it was brand new. $120k in 2003, sold for $155k in 2011. We could afford it because we were dual income and had no children. That was Malcolms parents problem. They were of a generation who had it even easier than we did, but were careless, and had 4 children, eventually 5, but ultimately only had to care for 4. THAT is what broke them. The house could have been paid off, but utilities and having to pay for 4 children is just too much, ignore any property taxes they may also have.

To be fair getting a job like that is a hell of a lot easier than applying for urself esp as a high school student. (Depending, I would say it’s easier with fast food but that sucks, at least in a grocery store you can at least now receive better pay and even benefits). When you're married and have kids, it's important for the kids to see the parents as a unified force. Kids shouldn't be aware of major disagreements between the parents where child rearing is concerned, and those disagreements should be discussed in a healthy manner outside of their earshot. yeah Lois is kinda the reason most of them were chaotic most of the time. She would punish them for doing bad. But she would also punish them for doing good. Which why their reward system for doing things is so messed up. Even in the end when Malcolm could become a software CEO and earn 6figures Lois doesn't let him because hes supposed to be president of USA which was total bullshit. She just sabotaged their future so she could feel better for her minor acomplishments

@Will Mitchell Green she did do that actually, it was mentioned in season 6 episode "Pearl Harbor" and then there's the time Hal stole Malcolm's credit card and the time that he, Lois, and Dewey stole Malcolm's grant money, not that he used the part he did get any more productively than the three of them did.

the rate at which malcolm in the middle is growing is crazy. each character (especially the brothers) play off each other so well. its legendary bc it was one of the first shows to break the fourth wall & to not have a laugh track. at the same times till being genuinely funny. Goated show

They aren't poor. They got an average sized house, 2 cars, go on vacation and could afford to pay for Francis' military school.
It always deeply annoys me when people vent about how "broke" they are, when they got all things they need to live a comfortable live.

They are poor! They were the definition of a blue collar family living very blue collar life's! Francis was sent to MS as an alternative to juvie (payed by the state!) Their cars are a beaten up sedan and station wagon, and their holidays were waterparks and comp giveaways (Las Vegas for example) In an early season episode they shown an sinner format where Lois would use left overs from the day before and top It up with new food and follow the procedure for the day after and so on! Tell me again why you don't think they envisage a poor family, or tell me what a poor family even is, I'm intrigued....??

about the lighting, you guys know that they did try to use everything natural to its most in shooting.
meaning the house was a house, not a set. also the reasont the cmera cantake all positions and not blok us in one corner from which we have to witness everything
and also the lighting, like in this scene, it is the sun itself. It is very harsh and golden and thats about exactly how 90s and 00s cameras tookin sunlight. (i believe there is soe interior lights to light up the rest of the room so the contrast isnt so huge, but they are subtle and it makes the scene so much more realistic because thats how our brains are set to percieve light and angles of a room

Bryan Cranston isn't as involved in comedy as often as he used to be, but his sense of comedic timing has always been the gold standard. Like this joke is great but his delivery legitimately pushes it up to being one of my favourite jokes ever.
