Yeah I think overlooked is more accurate than hated. For whatever reason, they never caught on as much as other Hondas, even though the later preludes came with more power stock than any form of civic from that era ever did.

The only thing I llked about this car was the digital fuel gauge . my buddy and I both bought our first cars in 04. I bought a 90 gst and he went for the 93 prelude with a body kit on it. My car ' looked worse" everybody liked his. But I blew his doors off every single time. I wouldn't even need to downshift.

I love my 5th gen prelude. The big problem with the car is that there is no way near the amount of aftermarket parts and accessories for the prelude. However they are getting so rare and it's still such a fun project car for me. I don't think I'll get rid of it anytime soon

This is the first time I've ever heard of the Preludes of this generation being hated. They're beloved for their motors and it's styling. It just wasn't a popular platform that took off in comparison to the more popular Integra of the same generation.

The OEM FRM liners on the H22 are actually quite stout for an OEM unit, specifically the OBD1 H22A which had a semi closed deck. It was arguably one of the strongest of OEM cylinders Honda produced untill the S2000 came around, which also has FRM liners and is known to take insane amounts of boost in OEM form. The real issue is the cast pistons of the H22, they have weak ringlands which are prone collapse under higher boost levels. Throw in the primitive tuning methods of the 90s and early 2000s and you have a recipe for disaster. FMUs running 80 psi of rail pressure on the back side of stock injectors, APEXi VAFCs, fish tank check valves inline with map sensors, etc. The whole "H22s have weak cylinders" was a myth that came around in the early 2000s. It's not the cylinders, it's the pistons. Throw some Mahle Gold pistons in it and a set of rods and they'll take +800 whp on the FRM liners.

I worked for Acura during the last few years of the Prelude and towards the end, dealerships were marking them down significantly. I came close to buying one but ended up going to college and forgot. Recently, I started looking for a third car and came across some really nice examples of the last-gen Preludes. It would be cool to see more of them around again. I thought they were sort of sexy looking.

The prelude and the H22 are both very underrated. I have a '94 Ej1 with an H22a and it's the most fun vehicle I've ever owned. Last spring it jumped timing and miraculously didn't do any damage. I drove it in limp mode for two weeks before I found out what had happened.

Fun fact. I used to rule my town streets with a 2001 Eclipse GT. I was taking down Tiburons, Integras, civics and non turbo older Eclipses. It was a Honda Prelude that eventually beat my slightly modified Eclipse. Probably making 10 more horses over stock. I missed those days.

I've two 4th gens and loved both of them. The second one I had the previous owner dumped a ton of money into it and the thing was legit fast. The H series engines are decent platforms. They just don't have the aftermarket support and they start off heavier than a Civic so they get overlooked. They're vanishing very quickly. I hardly see any on the road now

Also as a testament to how tough the H series is (the one I'm mentioning here is the H23) the first Prelude I had the previous owner had an actual cold air intake, like he cut a hole in the wheel well and routed the intake right above the ground. Being very young and not knowing shit about cars I hydrolocked that engine, twice. Both times all I did was drain the water and mush out of it, fill it with new oil and kept going. Kept it for another five years and had not a single issue from it.

I have only heard one person say "its just a prelude" owning my 5th gen. I plan to keep mine for a long time.
If only Honda had done more with this car, it probably would have been much more of a gem like most of the luxury jdm at the top of the market.

Gotta love that VTEC! The 5th gen has a very refined feel to it. Interior is less vibration prone than the 4th gen but if I had to choose between 4th and 5th, it is 4th gen every time.

I've owned 2 5thgens and a lot of civic owners really spreading the hate. I still have a '99 Nordic Mist with a factory 5speed with factory black leather. The Prelude was the first Honda sports car and they handle great from the factory. That 5thgen in this video is a nice example. When I was in automotive school in LINY they had a black 2001 Type SH with 300 miles that was donated from the Honda Factory for us to learn on(I went to Auto School over 15 years ago).

The last cool Integra was from 1994 to 2001 I think. This Prelude was released in 1997. More Integras are available because the three year head start and they were cheaper. As time went on, after market companies supported the more popular car.

I got mine in 97’. Amazing and it looked as if it belonged on the Acura lot. Just as refined on the inside as it was on the outside. My Brothers 96’ GS-R was all business. The two looked as if they were switched at birth, the Prelude looked as if it belonged to Acura and the Integra looked as if it belonged to Honda.

I have a 2001 Prelude and I can agree that it is an amazing car. You get classic 90's Honda feel with a premium twist. I don't think anyone ever hated the prelude, it was just the middle child of Honda once the S2000 was released. Now that I own one I tend to have an eye for more preludes. I've come to notice that most of the remaining clean, stock preludes are owned by old people. Don't really know why, I just tend to see more old people driving them than I do younger people

I didn’t know these existed until around 2019 when I bought one as I wanted a manual car and it was the right price and modifiable. FELL IN LOVE. Ended up selling it as my other vehicle is my first vehicle (old dodge truck) and I refuse to get rid of that and I wanted a newer and more reliable daily. The Lude was great but I needed work from things the previous owner did. My biggest regret is not buying a 3rd vehicle and keeping it. I miss it every single day and I WILL own another one. It’s enough to say it’s my attainable dream car

I went from a 1991 prelude si to 97 prelude base to a 2001 Prelude sh and I fully decked it out but not overboard. Just black on black leather, lowered, full stock lip kit, all the bolt ons from full exhaust to intake to headers and light tint. It was immaculate condition. It was the cleanest prelude ive ever seen and man it drove so nice but it was definitely too heavy but it did handle like a dream and it still had nice power and sound it just lags in the lower gears but once you get into 3rd and vtec kicks in it really starts to make up for its slower start. I was only one in my area with a Prelude and was known as the Prelude guy. I felt really unique and it was so fun. Also the vtec just sounds so amazing in the 2001 sh. Its super robotic very similar to the Rsx. Oh and mine was a 6 speed stick!

I have never heard anyone say they hate the Honda Prelude. It is a beautiful car and I wish Honda would reintroduce them back in production. I had one once and had friends who owned them and they all loved these beautiful cars. I loved the 80’s models with their pop up lights. Wasn’t a huge fan of the last 2 models. My dream car is to own another Prelude with their new design have seen on the net

They were definitely forgotten and not as well-known fairly quickly that underdog feeling was probably why I used to be obsessed with them. Looking back, it didn't understeer, but it was noticeably heavier than other platforms Civics Del Sols S2000s etc. so it wasn't as desirable for mod/racing, but main problem was price and with V6 Accord Coupe alongside w/same hp more popular and selling more, just made more sense back then to just move on.

With owning a 3rd gen prelude, I’m quite happy they are unknown or just not built as often, although it sucks because I wish there was more aftermarket support for these cars. There was a guy who lived by me a few years ago that had a boosted h22a and was the cleanest prelude Iv even seen. It was this dope darker blue and had a carbon fiber hood and trunk. Te37 and made probably 400+hp. They would have been dope it they were rwd.

My coworker got his hands on a mostly original 1980 Honda prelude from a barn find. The carb was siezed and super expensive, so he upgraded it and got it running. The speakers work, the alternator works, the ELECTRIC FAN WORKS. The sunroof seals and the electronics work

They were expensive. The initial expense did translate into continued expense as a used car.
People picked a civic because they wee more common, and less expensive.
If I recall, Prelude weighs more then some of the other honda cars people like to tune which matters to some people.
The Prelude nametag is sort of out of sight out of mind now. A relic from the 90's, forgotten because it was replaced. Like Dodge Intrepid, Nissan Pulsar, etc. nametags that were instantly recognizable but people have forgotten to time.

I had are really clean 5th gen prelude type sh for about 2 years and I absolutely loved it. It made a great daily and the fact that it’s a little heaver than the civic of the time made it actually feels safe to drive. I would totally buy another one if the opportunity was right. Great car that not a lot of people even thing about

For me I loved the 4th gen preludes and the 5th gens. I had a black 98 Prelude. I don't understand why they didn't continue with the 4th gen interior though, I loved it's instrument cluster so much! I wasn't so found of the standard instrument gauges in the 5th gen.

Man this makes miss my old one so much. Had 98 Prelude VTi-R down under and it was my first car. Was honestly the best. H22, handled great, looked great, was roomy enough and had a great seating position. Couldn't ask for any more than that. Down under they get a fair amount of hate, mostly just because as you said, they're heavy and people think all they do is leak oil 24/7. Great video!

All D/B/H/F series Hondas leak oil. You keep distributor seals, VTEC solenoid seals, valve cover gaskets, and oil pan gaskets in stock at the ready to change them at a moment's notice. Quality gaskets and the magic touch will help a lot, but they are a pain to keep dry.

I had a 97 with the auto stick for 10 years. I absolutely loved that car. Was so much fun to drive. Had a little getty up, especially in higher revs (V-tecs rocked!), and handled like a dream, and mine was pretty much stock. If you can ever find one, very much worth the investment.

I honestly love almost everything about my 5thgen prelude it sounds pretty good, it handles great and H22A4 loves the high rpm, the only thing I "hate" about them is they a lot of oil and I find the gears aren't long enough i kinda wish they came with a 6spd.

I had ordered one through carmax in 2002, a type SH with 30k miles. Paid 200 bucks to have it shipped but ended up getting a base RSX 5 speed after all. While I loved that car and didn't get rid of it until around 250,000 miles I kind of wish I had gotten the red 2001 Prelude. Even today I think it's a beautiful car and last I heard there were only a few hundred surviving models left in the US. Great car, high revving and had that original VTEC feel, almost turbo like when it kicked in before they switched to I-VTEC.

I’ve been in love with the 5th gen since I can remember. Until I got my s2000 it was my favorite car Honda made. I remember being in high school (2005) and we fabbed a sus turbo kit on my 98 but it was dope af. We had maybe 300hp but I was in high school with a turbo prelude, racing new edge mustangs for money. Man bring me back please

Preludes were made for the matured driver who still enjoyed having fun on his way runnings errands around town. I’ve rode in all my friends other cars and everyone including myself noticed how smooth it feels when it revs out through the rpms

These came out when I was just a young teenager, and I thought they were the coolest things I've ever seen 😂 I still kind of do but they need rebuilds and alot of upgrades compared to other options available nowadays.

I’m probably gonna get reemed out with my story but I bought mine as a winter beater for my s13 I ended up falling in love with the prelude so much I sold my s13 to fund restoring and modifying the prelude. I used to be a Honda hater but after driving my friends integra then buying my prelude I became obsessed with hondas

It was too expensive for most Honda Bois and not as fast as a bolt on b16 civic but was a more sophisticated car for an older crowd. I loved mine, wouldn’t mind having another one, it was much more comfortable than my ek coupe and had some pretty cool tech for the time like ATTS, an acoustic feedback audio system, and what I like the call the big block of Honda 4 cylinders (before the k24) in the h22.

I just sold my 5th gen it hurt my damn soul I regret it now, the handling feel with some decent coilovers and wheels is amazing and the way a healthy h22a4 cross over into vtec is orgasmic 👌imo and the looks never gets old I'll definitely be back with one again hopefully but I needed it to get my dream car a 2g gst eclipse maybe one day I can own both

I love the Prelude, literally the best handling car I've ever driven. Take it through some serious Twisties on decent tires and it's the best.
And that H22A has a 9k redline, just fyi.

It looks so similar to my 5th gen. It is still a fun car to drive, just not fast in a straight line; with modern traffic it doesn't really matter that it lacks a bit of power.

I remember the prelude fell under the category of sports car with insurance which when you're young doesn't seem like a sports car that doesn't worth the difference. I've seen a few super mint 5th gens running around and I still think they look fantastic. They just didn't feel as modular as the rest of the Honda Acura lineup. I still have a love of every 90s Honda. I wonder if it's safe to own one these days.

my 2nd car in 1988 was an 81 prelude and a slammed it which was not that common back then. Most lowered vehicles then were mini trucks. I got so many looks and it actually looked good being that low.

My first car was a 93 Prelude Si in 1999, it was a great car and was fun/cheap to mod. Man high school me made some terrible decisions, cheap coilovers turned all the way down for "the full 4." Yeah after bouncing down the road for a few days with my alignment so out of wack it felt like it was trying to kill me I decided to put it up a few inches. Dash looked super futuristic for the 90s. I would have LOVED to have the VTEC version at the time but those were harder to come by.

The 5th Gen Prelude is one of the few long nose sports cars with that 90’s feel and look. I don’t think I could sell my 97 SH 5-speed. When the ATTS works the car feels very light around turns. People are usually pretty pumped to see it on the road lowered on 17”. My next engine will likely be the H22A for a little more HP. I still love driving it slammed and I’m in my 50’s.

I drove a 99 prelude for 10 years. Spent under $1000 when it came to maintenance. Was an excellent and super reliable car. Motor and transmission ran perfectly at 90,000 miles and at 250,000 when I sold it. Still miss it.

I had no idea the Honda prelude was a thing until just before a year ago. I was kind of into cars then, but the second my friend showed me a picture of a 5th Gen prelude, I fell IN LOVE. That moment I knew I needed one and started my search. Luckily I found someone willing to trade for my Acura 1.6 EL and I finally got my own! 1999 Honda Prelude Type SH in nighthawk black. I am going to be totally honest before I became a Volkswagen Audi guy I used to have quite a few Hondas and now I’m kind of moving more towards the American side specifically mustangs but this kind of makes me wanna get a prelude. Especially with that exhaust that he put on or the car already had, It definitely did not sound like a rice 🍚 rocket 🚀

The only thing I hated about this gen prelude was the msrp especially availability as they were so hard to find in my city brand new and even for 5-6 years or so after. 21 or so yrs ago when the prelude was last for sale I had my first full time job and able to buy a decent car.

Yes I couldn’t get a brand new 2k1 or 2k and it turned out I couldn’t get a 97 or even 95-96 end of the 4th gen because of the resale value and availability back then. I wanted one so badly

As a Honda guy I will say that they were not nearly as simple compared to civics. It’s the same overall setup just bigger, harder to work on, and more expensive. So naturally people stuck to what was cheap and worked. Not to mention the 4ws system that was dope but so expensive when it broke. It was more worth it to just swap the prelude motor into the civics as it was a lot more simple set up. Preludes are making a hard come back lately though.

Before I could drive I was told they were slow because they were too heavy. As I got older and learned more about cars I found out they were really nice. Funny thing was a lot of guys who said they were slow were driving even slower sohc civics lol

This makes me miss my '99 prelude that I had for about 13-14 years. I sadly had to sell it cause I needed something newer that wasn't falling apart and I had no where to keep my lude. I do love my 9th gen SI but I still wish I had my lude too as a project car. Also whatever exhaust he's using sounds terrible, he should get an Apexi Noir exhaust, it really brings out the lower notes and has none of that terrible angry bee raspiness like this one does. Also it comes painted flat black so looks sick and stealth too.

Ive owned em1, dc2 gsr, and got a prelude afterwards. And i think the prelude chassis and interior is the best forsure. My 98 prelude interior held up super good, and also the car didnt creak or squeak when driving compared to civic and integras of same age. Also the h22 had amazing torque to make it funner. I thought it was more fun to drive, compared to civic and integra, but its just so heavy. My prelude had full lipkit with koni yellow. The only con was how much it burned oil and the h22 isnt as bullet proof compared too the K series. Sold my prelude SH a few years ago but ill always have love for it. The space inside and everything on the car was built great. It was just the motor that made me sell mine. K swapped prelude wouldve been amazing. But its not worth the money cuz i rather have a integra k swapped

Personally the only thing I ever had a problem with it is simply that it was their top of the line model . But instead of making it a proper rear wheel drive sports car , they built the NSX and then everyone forgot about the Prelude .

this vid brought back memories. i had a 99 typeSH in black. the thing that killed the lude wasn't the cheaper civics or the s2k. it was the accord coupe. the 2000 accord coupe was sporty looking compared with prior gens, and you can get a 4 cylinder version for less than the lude, and for the same price as the lude, you can get a V6. on top of that, i'm sure the profit margin for the accord coupe was way higher than for the lude since the accord coupe shares platform with the rest of the accord lineup, so it's a no brainer that honda dropped the lude. another mistake honda made with the 5gen lude is that it was only offered with the 2.2 VTEC. 4gen ludes were offered in lesser motor versions, making them more affordable, and thus allowing honda to sell them in higher numbers.

My wife refuses to give up her 2001 Prelude she got in high school. It’s automatic, but it’s still fun to drive. She was the second owner but got it with under 5k miles or so, and it’s been super reliable. Just struggles to pass smog now.

I remember when the 5th gen Honda Prelude came out, it was overlooked at the time and didn’t sell well. People didn’t care for them much at that time especially since it had the same engine as the 4th gen Honda Prelude. It’s not that the 5th gen Honda Prelude was ever hated it just had a ton of competition with all the other Honda’s and Acura’s at the time!

I loved my 5th gen. Still the best memories with a sports car I’ve had. I did everything to that car. It was sadly stolen about a year ago from a tuning shop. I bought an AW11 instead after that, and I love the AW11 but I miss my Prelude every day. Handling is amazing, power is fantastic, looks are unmatched. And they’re rare. And the Prelude community is amazing. Once I have a place to put 3 cars I’m getting another one. And fuck Civics.
