Half Me's sound blends modern metal and hardcore with elements of 90s nu metal, characterized by pounding riffs, intense breakdowns, and a mixture of aggressive and refined vocals.
The band's breakthrough came in May 2021 with the single Exitwound, which featured Jack Bergin from Void of Vision. The track garnered significant attention, landing the band in KNOTFEST’s “Countdown to Oblivion,” which helped propel them into the spotlight.
In February 2023, they released their debut album Soma via Arising Empire, with standout tracks that explore dark and introspective themes. The track Blacklight delves into the concept of losing control, inspired by true crime stories and characters like Michael Myers and Fritz Honka. Another track, I Am But A Guest In Exile, portrays a protagonist spiraling into paranoia and delusion, questioning their own reality while suffering from sleep deprivation and schizophrenic episodes.
Following the album's release, Half Me embarked on a European tour, playing high-profile festivals like Wacken Open Air. They were also nominated for the Heavy Music Awards.
Around 2023, the band's lineup shifted when guitarist Julius Jansen departed from the band, and Silvan Petersen filled his role. This change influenced their songwriting, as they moved away from a polished sound, opting for a more raw and organic feel in line with the new themes they were exploring.
In September 2024, Half Me released the EP titled Opium. They are also planning to release a second part to the EP in early 2025. Thematically, this follow-up will connect with the original Opium release, and recording sessions are scheduled after their upcoming U.S. tour.

i’m at the edge of my seat
relief before I forsake
i’ll put the words in your mouth
i’ll make it easy for you
it’s a confession of your deeds
i know you feel itseen it in the way you move
i fucking feel it again, surfacing
but never coming through
tormenting you
there is no way home from the devil’s womb
poisoned blessing in disguise, a little less than I confide
singing feel-good lullabies, the proper dose makes it alright
one final step into the gates of hell
money can’t buy us free, ‘cause we’re the captive prey
one final step into the gates of hell
money can’t help us now
we sold ourselves to the luxury
there’s no recovery
obliterate, all burdens erased
i’ve seen it coming, just a little too late
ecstasy at the price of our existence
we’re just a tumor so delicate that one is listening
feeding fire with more gasoline
agony, anxiety
begin to see behind the devil’s schemethe time has come to make deniers believe
one final step into the gates of hell
money can’t buy us free, ‘cause we’re the captive prey
one final step into the gates of hell
money can’t help us now
there’s no recovery
The lyrics of "Magma Hour" by Half Me encapsulate themes of lost opportunities, self-realization, and the consequences of one's actions. The opening lines suggest a sense of desperation and possible betrayal as the singer reflects on a situation where everything has been lost. The feeling of being on the edge of one's seat conveys a sense of anticipation and uncertainty, as well as a potential turning point.
The reference to putting words in someone else's mouth may imply manipulation or control, suggesting a power dynamic at play in the relationship being described. The confession of deeds alludes to a sense of guilt or accountability for past actions, hinting at a need for reconciliation or closure. The repeated mention of feeling and movement underscores the emotional depth and physical impact of the situation.
The imagery of the devil's womb symbolizes a place of no return or redemption, indicating that the consequences of certain choices are irreversible. The idea of a poisoned blessing highlights the irony of seeking solace in something that ultimately causes harm or deception. The notion of selling oneself to luxury underscores the idea of sacrificing one's values or integrity for material gain.
The references to hell, captivity, and the inability to buy freedom with money emphasize the idea of being trapped in a cycle of self-destruction and regret. The imagery of fire, gasoline, and torment suggests a heightened sense of turmoil and struggle, while the call to make deniers believe hints at a desire for acknowledgment or validation. The finality of the closing lines reinforces the idea that there is no turning back or recovery from the consequences of one's actions.
