Within a year’s time, Halifax found itself among the rookie bands on the 2004 Warped Tour. By early 2005, after bowling them over Drive-Thru founders Richard Reines and Stefanie Reines during a New Jersey gig with The Early November, the label tweaked and reissued Reference. Halifax continued touring and building its fanbase while concocting what would become The Inevitability of a Strange World, a collection of riff-heavy arena rock anthems that blend post-punk hardcore with hard rock influences, a la Mötley Crüe.
The band took a three year break which was everything but a holiday: it was “a trial in life that gave us one ultimatum: stand up and fight for what we believe in or break up. 90% of bands fail, we like to think we're in the other 10%" explains Tommy. “Not to mention how much we have matured in the last 3 years as musicians and songwriters, let alone adults. We planted our feet firmly on the ground when we made this commitment to music and it’s going to take a lot more than faulty indie labels, lawsuits, and debt to sniper us out. We're not a band that backs down when faced with barriers. We have more respect for our fans and ourselves than to let anything get in the way or stop us from being artists.”
Wielding a melodic guitar driven sound, the quartet is back with their new EP Align. Halifax shows off their newly polished song-craftsmanship while still staying true to their musical influences, as they combine pop sensibility with their unmistakable riff rock and pounding rhythms. The band even shows off their penchant for reggae music in "Snake Slide", and "No Saturation".
Such A Terrible Trend

So I'll kick in the engine, get myself out of town
To all my disbelievers - I'll teach you to believe
We get addicted to our medicine, we create our own disease
I found the cure, and it's inside of me
Won't you open your eyes to see?
Revenge is bitter, when allies turn rivals in times like these
Make it harder and harder to breathe
Cut throat and dripping, but I'm skipping out on what I need most
I've got an appetite for love suppressed by fear
We've got our fingers on the trigger and the barrel at the mirror
I found the cure, and it's inside of me
Won't you open your eyes to see?
Revenge is sweet, when you're so discretely falling out of reach, yeah
Revenge is bitter, when allies turn rivals in times like these
Make it harder and harder to breathe
I can't help that I'm angry and I love when I'm in pain
Shaking off the water from the unrelentless rain
This atmosphere is nowhere near what it used to be
The white flakes on the ceiling can't help but fall upon me (help but fall upon me)
Break my bones, cause I'm beautiful when I'm not alone
Mend my bones, cause I'm ready, I'm ready to go home
Revenge is sweet, when you're so discretely falling out of reach, yeah
Revenge is bitter, when allies turn rivals in times like these
Make it harder and harder to breathe
Break my bones, cause I'm beautiful when I'm not alone
Mend my bones, cause I'm ready, I'm ready to go home
I said I'm sorry for the rain, and where it all fell down
Halifax's song "Such a Terrible Trend" is a powerful and introspective track that deals with themes of addiction, revenge, and the search for self-awareness. The opening lines set the tone for the song, with the singer apologizing for their mistakes and missteps. They are determined to take control of their life and move away from the toxic environment they find themselves in, kicking their engine and leaving town behind. The song then turns to the idea of addiction and how we create our own problems, with the singer claiming to have found the cure inside themselves, calling on others to open their eyes and see it too.
The chorus revolves around the theme of revenge, both the sweet feeling of getting what you want, and the bitterness that comes when allies turn into rivals. The verses expand on these themes, with the singer feeling angry and in pain but also craving love and connection. They recognize their own beauty, even in moments of vulnerability, and are ready to move on and go home.
Overall, the song is a powerful exploration of personal struggle and growth, with a strong emphasis on taking ownership of one's own life and choices.
