Souvenirs
Hall Tom T Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take these arms of mine, throw them away
They're just souvenirs of some other day
Take these lips of mine, they're useless to me
They're just souvenirs of things that used to be

(Chorus)
They're just souvenirs and who needs 'em now
They're just bits and pieces of my yesterday, anyhow
Take this old heart of mine, it's been beating too long
It's just a souvenir of something that went wrong

Take my yesterdays, the minutes, the hours
They're just souvenirs, they'll fade like the flowers
Take these eyes before I see her again
They're just souvenirs of things that might have been

(Chorus)
Ol' T's just a souvenir of something that went wrong

Overall Meaning

The song "Souvenirs" by Hall Tom T is a powerful ballad that reflects on the lingering pain of past memories. In the first two lines of the verse, the singer reflects on his arms and sees them as "souvenirs" of another time, something that he no longer has any use for. This sentiment is carried through the rest of the song, as the singer reflects on the uselessness of his lips, heart, and eyes, all of which are nothing more than reminders of what he has lost.

The chorus of the song drives home this sense of loss and futility. The souvenirs that the singer speaks of are "bits and pieces" of his life that he no longer needs, and yet they continue to haunt him. The metaphor of these souvenirs being like flowers that will eventually fade underscores the idea that even beautiful memories can ultimately lose their hold over us.

The final lines of the song are perhaps the most poignant. The singer himself is just a souvenir; his pain and regret are nothing more than reminders of something that went wrong in his life. But even so, he cannot let go of these memories, and they continue to define him.

Overall, "Souvenirs" is a deeply moving and introspective song that speaks to the universal experience of loss and regret. It is a reminder that even the brightest moments in our lives can ultimately become nothing more than shadows of what once was.

R.I.P. Tom T. Hall! Been a long time admirer of his songs. In interviews he often remarked that he wrote songs about real life experiences and how some of his songs were inspired by things he'd seen or had heard from all walks of life. He also used to say that once in awhile he'd write what he'd call "little darlin songs"...which was his description of the typical love song found in country music. I'm making the assumption that this is one of those. I'm surprised nobody in country music discovered this song and put it out as a single decades ago.
