Watched this, and it was a little one-sided, which documentaries often can be. I think the criticisms of the Seoul government are valid. But I also think it's kind of the go-to response. "Oh it's the governments fault. They should have done more." That only focuses on one element of the cause.
Why did so many people go? Because it was, as one girl said: "the place to be". Nobody wanted to miss out on the big event. Fine, that's pretty typical. But these 100,000 people didn't all suddenly appear at one time.

Meaning that there was opportunity for many to choose not to go. In the documentary several of the people they speak to tell how they received calls and texts pointing out how crowded it already was, and yet they still went. Because they didn't think it was going to be that bad I guess. But it wasn't like they got there without any prior knowledge and then suddenly saw these tens of thousands of people. Once they arrived and saw for themselves, people STILL wanted to be there and tried to get to wherever it was they wanted to hang out.

Or what about when first responders arrived and tried to stop more people from coming, but people ignored them and the barriers. Or when responders where trying to get people out to give them aid and people (who clearly were not trapped) just stood around in the way. We've all been that age, and you just want to be carefree and fun. People who should have listened didn't. Isn't the whole point of Itaewon the fact that it's supposed to be the place in Seoul where you don't have to do what you're told?

Crowd control is a thing, yes. But one key element of it is whether you can get people to comply or not. If 100,000 people aren't listening to you, there really isn't much you can do. And if they had taken more extreme measures then people would be blaming the government for that.

Yes, you can say it should never have gotten that bad in the first place, and that's worth arguing. But my point is that it's not JUST the failing of the government to prepare which caused this.

Again, I am NOT excuses the government for their failing. And I know if I say that 1000 times people will still not understand it. What I am saying is that if people are serious about preventing these sorts of things from happening again (which are all too frequent in the world) then you need to do more than just blame the government.

@@TheRealityofFake You are crazy. It's Jeff Zimbalist. His wheelhouse is documentaries. Him and his brother are likely top 10 on the planet in doing these type of documentaries. They probably got a 7 figure budget. Zero chance someone in Korea could get a budget this high unless it was an international streamer.
(I'm likely leaving some out.)
- Favela Rising - The film follows the life of Anderson Sa through the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in his attempt to use Afro-Reggae music to provide a positive outlet for the residents of a dangerous environment.
- The Two Escobars - ESPN 30 for 30 about Sports in Columbia when Pablo Escobar was at his zenith
- Another ESPN doc about Jim Brown. Another about Arnold Schwarzenegger
- Another about Pele
- NOSSA CHAPE tracks the rebuilding of the Chapecoense football club in Brazil after an airplane carrying the team crashed on November 28th, 2016, leaving all but three of the players dead
- Surfing Doc about the '90s
- Give Us This Day set in East St. Louis, Illinois, the city with the highest homicide rate in the United States, where the community copes with the terror of pervasive gun violence.
- The Line: In covert modern warfare, the line between right and wrong has blurred. This docuseries examines the moral ambiguities of war as embodied by the 2018 case in which a US Navy SEAL platoon accused its chief, Eddie Gallagher, of war crimes.
- 11 minutes (about the Las Vegas mass shooting): Through emotional first-hand accounts and never-before-seen archival footage, this documentary immerses viewers inside the largest mass shooting in our country's history, at what was supposed to be a festival celebrating country music.

The wall of people never fails to freak me out. Humans never seem to learn when these things happen and ot fills we with a deep sense of despair.

Same.

@noceur_jollux

This documentary is not available to the general public in Korea, which should tell how thriving the democracy is in Korea.

@lindasue263

My heart breaks for all the lives lost and for the survivors who will be forever changed.
I'm so proud of those who were interviewed and the thousands who were not.
Stay strong!!

@kayladannie

I recently heard that Japan very strictly banned Halloween in Shibua this year and I felt sad and wanted to know why, this is exactly why, so they have no entirely policed and shut down the event for the safety of shibua and its citizens. That is the right call.

@justinejustice_league1857

South Korean officials still don't want to acknowledge culpability for the ferry boat sinking let alone the crowd crush.

@traveltm

Glad came across this. Watching and people have called but thinking since doc must mean no one bothered to respond

@OnMyFingerTips
