Watched this, and it was a little one-sided, which documentaries often can be. I think the criticisms of the Seoul government are valid. But I also think it's kind of the go-to response. "Oh it's the governments fault. They should have done more." That only focuses on one element of the cause.
Why did so many people go? Because it was, as one girl said: "the place to be". Nobody wanted to miss out on the big event. Fine, that's pretty typical. But these 100,000 people didn't all suddenly appear at one time.

Meaning that there was opportunity for many to choose not to go. In the documentary several of the people they speak to tell how they received calls and texts pointing out how crowded it already was, and yet they still went. Because they didn't think it was going to be that bad I guess. But it wasn't like they got there without any prior knowledge and then suddenly saw these tens of thousands of people. Once they arrived and saw for themselves, people STILL wanted to be there and tried to get to wherever it was they wanted to hang out.

Or what about when first responders arrived and tried to stop more people from coming, but people ignored them and the barriers. Or when responders where trying to get people out to give them aid and people (who clearly were not trapped) just stood around in the way. We've all been that age, and you just want to be carefree and fun. People who should have listened didn't. Isn't the whole point of Itaewon the fact that it's supposed to be the place in Seoul where you don't have to do what you're told?

Crowd control is a thing, yes. But one key element of it is whether you can get people to comply or not. If 100,000 people aren't listening to you, there really isn't much you can do. And if they had taken more extreme measures then people would be blaming the government for that.

Yes, you can say it should never have gotten that bad in the first place, and that's worth arguing. But my point is that it's not JUST the failing of the government to prepare which caused this.

Again, I am NOT excuses the government for their failing. And I know if I say that 1000 times people will still not understand it. What I am saying is that if people are serious about preventing these sorts of things from happening again (which are all too frequent in the world) then you need to do more than just blame the government.

@@TheRealityofFake You are crazy. It's Jeff Zimbalist. His wheelhouse is documentaries. Him and his brother are likely top 10 on the planet in doing these type of documentaries. They probably got a 7 figure budget. Zero chance someone in Korea could get a budget this high unless it was an international streamer.

I recently heard that Japan very strictly banned Halloween in Shibua this year and I felt sad and wanted to know why, this is exactly why, so they have no entirely policed and shut down the event for the safety of shibua and its citizens. That is the right call.

25 years ago or longer, I was at the US FESTIVAL. It went on for three days, around 1978 or 1979, in Southern California. The same thing happened, on a smaller scale. People were passing out. If you were in the middle kind of up towards the front, you couldn’t get out of the situation. It was hard to breathe. People started throwing water bottles to the people there. Some people got lifted up and passed overhead by all the crowd I’m chill those people were out. Everyone in the crowd helped pass those people overhead to the back of the line, where they could get medical help from the medics there. It was in the summertime, and it was very very very hot. This is terrible. I pray it never happens again!!!😢🙏

Not sure heard of that case. But saw doc at concert, rap artist and artist either couldn’t tell or thought it was funny, and did nothing when people getting crushed. Then saw incident in the UK, I think, at football game. People had snuck in and too many people in one area but no one official tried to stop even when it became more obvious it was an issue and people got crushed against front barriers and some died. So horrific.

The Korean government is the one to be blamed definitely. They had enough police forces to prevent this tragedy but only focused on the president families’ safety that day. That is why people in Korea are angry about it. That day, the government was non-existent for the safety of people. Instead, the government only protected those in power.

The President decided to move out of the White House that night which utilized thousands of policeman. Then the head of the policeman dep decided not to pick up the phone while he was eating out then used the furthest route to get to the location bec he didn't want to walk. Poorly plan on lives of many innocent teenagers and young adults.

Huh? Overwhelming majority that were there were after hours celebrating Halloween with civilians. A number of them were injured, as well.

They contributed about as much to the problem as regular ordinary citizens ignoring the pleas of a few policemen there trying to help others by trying to turn people around by yelling how others were dying and being hurt, but they were ignored and continued on to add to the ever growing crowd. Much like how the businesses never bothered to turn down their music along with people celebrating in streets despite the ever growing crowd of ambulances and emergency crews trying to get through to give CPR and people yelling.

If you truly want to point fingers, it goes to the chiefs at the police department. Calls were made hours before anyone was ever crushed, warning of an influx of a crowd with people losing belongings and being mildly hurt. They ignored them. The government is the real problem in this situation, no one else — just see the poor response to the ferry boat being capsized and rescue crews doing nothing, civilians having to be the ones to save people (much like here with the Halloween situation), with the government even ignoring the pleas from the US Navy begging to come in and help get those kids off the boat to safety … but image was more important than taking foreign help, resulting in so many lives lost.

Is the Korean government really to blame for these deaths?
I don’t think anyone expected this, not in their wildest dreams. It was a freak accident. People a block over just thought it was young people having a great time. Even the kids being crushed could not believe that this is what was actually happening. How could anyone else even fathom such a horrific situation.
This was a horrible tragedy, no one entity is to blame. Unfortunately, it is a terrible lesson that we must ALL learn from. Just like the concerts where this kind of thing still happens 😭

Yes. The back alley where people were trapped and crushed used to be kept in one direction and directed by police officers on Halloween EVERY YEAR or any day when they expect high traffic due to festivals or concerts because it is steep and very narrow.

But last year there was no one controlling the traffic! No police. No local authority took care of their routine safety procedure.

Last year, most police forces in the region were deployed to escort President Yoon, who somehow moved out of the official residence and workplace of the president of South Korea and moved to an office building in Yongsan Borough, where the crush happened.

Instead of covering the perspectives of those most impacted, they focus on the few westerners that were there. If you care about this story, it should be because humans lost their lives. Not just because it included western people. And it's important to hear a range of stories. It paints an inaccurate picture if the only people who they interviewed directly were those who speak English.
