He said "one day I'd realize why I don't have any friends"
I find myself alone at night
Unless I'm havin' sex
But he can make me golden if I just showed some respect
But I don't let him touch me anymore
I said "I'm not something to butter up
And taste when you get bored
'Cause I have spent too many nights on dirty bathroom floors
To find some peace and quiet right behind a wooden door"
He said "please don't go away"
He said "please don't go away"
I said "it's too late"
I said "it's too late"
He said "please don't go away"
He said "please don't go away"
I said "it's too late"
I said "it's too late"
And now I can't stop thinking that I can't stop thinking
That I almost gave you everything
And now the whole thing's finished and I can't stop wishing
That I never gave you anything
You wrote 100 letters just for me
And I find them in my closet in the pockets of my jeans
Now I'm constantly reminded of the time I was 19
Every single one's forgotten in a laundromat machine
But I don't let him touch me anymore
I said "I'm not something to butter up
And taste when you get bored
'Cause I have spent too many nights on dirty bathroom floors
To find some peace and quiet right behind a wooden door"
He said "please don't go away"
He said "please don't go away"
I said "it's too late"
I said "it's too late"
He said "please don't go away"
He said "please don't go away"
I said "it's too late"
I said "it's too late"
And now I can't stop thinking that I can't stop thinking
That I almost gave you everything
And now the whole thing's finished and I can't stop wishing
That I never gave you anything
And then I can't stop thinking that I can't stop thinking
That I almost gave you everything (I said it's too late)
And now the whole thing's finished and I can't stop wishing
That I never gave you anything
He said "please don't go away"
He said "please don't go away"
I said "it's too late"
I said "it's too late"
He said "please don't go away"
He said "please don't go away"
I said "it's too late"
I said "it's too late"
In "100 Letters," Halsey sings about a toxic relationship with an ex-lover who takes her for granted. The song title refers to a stack of letters the ex-boyfriend wrote her that she continues to find in her closet and on the pockets of her jeans. She realizes that she gave him too much of herself and that he manipulated her by promising to make her "golden" if she showed him respect. However, she has finally reached a point where she no longer allows him to disrespect her and use her for his pleasure, saying "I'm not something to butter up and taste when you get bored." Even though she regrets giving him everything and wishes she could take it all back, she knows that it's too late to change anything.
The chorus repeats the same lines, "He said 'please don't go away,' I said 'it's too late,'" emphasizing the finality of the situation and her decision to move on from the toxic relationship. She realizes that she deserves better and isn't willing to settle for less anymore.
Overall, "100 Letters" is a powerful anthem about self-respect, regret, and the pain of letting go of someone who doesn't value you. Through her raw and emotional lyrics, Halsey communicates the struggle of moving on from a toxic relationship and the importance of standing up for oneself.
