The Tradition
Halsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, the loneliest girl in town is bought for pennies a price
We dress her up in lovely gowns, she's easy on the eyes
Her soul is black and it's a fact that her sneer will eat you alive
And the buyer always brings her back, because all she does is cry

So take what you want
Take what you can
Take what you please
Don't give a damn
Ask for forgiveness
Never permission

Take what you want
Take what you can
Take what you please
Don't give a damn
It's in the blood and
This is tradition

Oh
Oh, the loneliest girl in town was bought for plenty a price
Well they dress her up in golden crowns, his smile hides a lie
She's smiles back, but it's a fact that her fear will eat her alive
Well she got the life that she wanted, but now all she does is cry

Take what you want
Take what you can
Take what you please
Don't give a damn
Ask for forgiveness
Never permission

Take what you want
Take what you can
Take what you please
Don't give a damn
It's in the blood and
This is tradition

You can't take it back
It's good as gone
Flesh amnesiac
This is your song

And I hope what's left will last all summer long
And they said that, "Boys were boys", but they were wrong

Take what you want
Take what you can
Take what you please
Don't give a damn
Ask for forgiveness
Never permission

Take what you want
Take what you can
Take what you please
Don't give a damn
It's in the blood and
This is tradition

Take what you want
Take what you can
Take what you please
Don't give a damn
Ask for forgiveness
Never permission

Take what you want
Take what you can
Take what you please
Don't give a damn

It's in the blood and
This is tradition

Overall Meaning

In Halsey's song "The Tradition", the lyrics speak to a system of misogyny in which women are commodified and sold to men. The opening lines describe the "loneliest girl in town" who is sold for a small sum, but who is nonetheless dressed up and presented as a desirable object. Despite her façade, the girl is hollow inside, as evidenced by her black soul and sneering demeanor. The buyer always brings her back because all she does is cry.

The chorus encourages a destructive, selfish approach to life. "Take what you want, take what you can, take what you please" without any regard for others' feelings or well-being. The line "ask for forgiveness, never permission" implies that it is better to beg for forgiveness after the fact than to seek consent beforehand. This mentality is framed as inevitable, even desirable, as "it's in the blood and this is tradition."

The second verse continues the theme of girls being sold and dressed up to please men. However, this time the girl is bought for a higher price and is given a false promise of a better life. Despite the apparent glamour of her situation, the girl is still consumed by fear and sadness. The final lines of the song imply that the damage caused by these events is irreversible, as "flesh" (representing the self) becomes "amnesiac" and the cycle of tradition repeats.

Overall, "The Tradition" is a commentary on the objectification and commodification of women that is normalized in society.

A masterpiece is an understatement. This depicts what sexual harassment, trafficking, and violence is. It is terrifying and disturbing thinking that this is becomes “tradition” in our lives.

Beautifully analysed. That was the message I was also getting from the song.

The best song on the album personally for me, so good, the piano is elegant, suspenseful and beautiful. The message is strong about the double entendre with 'tradition', toxic masculinity, loss of innocence and consent. Women who blindly trust tradition get the short end of the stick typically for the short comings of an immature or selfish husband. It's tragic that tradition is usually in favor of obedience from a submissive woman to a dominant male with plenty of riches, lacking constraints to ask for consent for intimacies because of entitlement and masculinity. Tragic that tradition is typically in favor of the perpetrator being forgiven for his crimes by the victim when he was the first on to commit the heinous acts than doing the right thing in the first place (consent). Is retaliation from the victim suddenly unjustified when they start to feel empowered by taking action? Very vexing and tragic cycle of pain and vengence. My confusing take on it.
