Don't Look Now I'm Being Followed. Act Normal
Hands Like Houses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is this the edge of the world?
We chased the horizon down ‘til it hung beneath our feet.
Now I’m drifting blind. All I know is we can’t move closer.

I’ve never seen the lights of the north,
The constellations are so unfamiliar.

We followed far, as far as this machinery takes us,
To some imaginary place where the compass shifts
And our lips drift to our cheeks.
Is this the edge of the world? All I know is we can’t move closer.

Searching for some apparent place where floated needles decide the way.
I’d dig in my heels but I might crack the ice.
Give me some solid ground.

The frost is sinking in, in my cheeks, in my chest, in my fingertips.
‘Desperation,’ we name every cape beyond the last.
Frozen senseless. Every day is a winter solstice.
The view’s a wonder, but I can’t take it in.

Sun, make canvas of coastlines, so I know where I stand.

We round each cape to find a bay to call our own.
We round each cape to find a coast to call our home.

Make canvas of coastlines.

Overall Meaning

The song "Don't Look Now I'm Being Followed. Act Normal" by Hands Like Houses is a poetic exploration of the feeling of being lost and disoriented. The lyrics speak of chasing the horizon, of being unable to find solid ground in a world that seems to shift and drift. The singer has never seen the lights of the north; they are lost in an unfamiliar landscape, searching for a place where they can feel grounded and secure.

The imagery in the song is rich and evocative. The "machinery" that the singer follows suggests a sense of being driven by external forces, of being swept along by the tides of fate. The idea of "floating needles" deciding the way speaks to the precariousness of the journey, the sense that the smallest misstep could lead to disaster. And the repeated refrain of "make canvas of coastlines" suggests a longing for something permanent and unchanging, a desire for a stable foundation in a world that seems to be in constant motion.

Despite the sense of disorientation and loss, the song also contains a sense of wonder and awe. The view may be overwhelming, but the singer is still able to appreciate its beauty. There is a sense of resilience and determination in the way that they continue to round each cape, searching for a place to call home. Ultimately, the song speaks to the human desire to find a sense of belonging and purpose, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

The lack of screaming is why I love this band. They're able to play heavier melodic shit without relying on screaming like most OTHER bands on Rise do. Best bands on Rise? HLH, Transit, Decoder, Emarosa... Bands that have little to no screaming. This might be my favorite album of the year. Amazing. This track, Antarctica, and The Sower are fantastic.

I like how the lyrics are comprehensible and actually tell a story with meaning. The music is well thought out too, I love these musicians.

I fancy myself as a singer; this part is so fucking cool.
The timing on the steps in the vocal run are sooooo fucking legit.
I try to sing it an octave lower and i can't help but smile every time i do it because it's so hard to find really insanely original stuff like this to sing along with.
the vocalist for this band is really really rly good
