I don't know what I will say and I'm afraid of
Being oblivious to oblivion
I'll say a prayer under my breath
And hope you'll hear
If it's my time to go
I don't want to look back
I'm waiting for something
Like a light to guide my way
Just step into nothing
When I'm not quite sure that
I don't want to stay
I want to believe that
That somehow I'll be fine
And everything's alright and
This is not my time
The art of balancing is lost on me
I don't know which way to fall into Infinity
Will it feel like waking up
Or falling back to dream
And sleep forever on?
If it's my time to go
I don't want to look back
I'm waiting for something
Like a light to guide my way
Just step into nothing
When I'm not quite sure that
I don't want to stay
I want to believe that
That somehow I'll be fine
And everything's alright and
This is not my time
Will it feel like waking up like before
The way your dream just disappears?
Will it feel like giving up
And letting go and drifting out?
I'm waiting for something
Like a light to guide my way
Just step into nothing
When I'm not quite sure that
I don't want to stay
I want to believe that
That somehow I'll be fine
And everything's alright and
This is not my time
This is not my time
This is not mine
The lyrics of "Grey Havens" by Hands Like Houses explore themes of uncertainty and contemplation in the face of mortality and the afterlife. The singer of the song grapples with the idea of existence and the unknown that lies beyond the edge of life, symbolized by the grey. There is a sense of fear and trepidation at the thought of being unaware of what comes after death, expressing a desire for solace and guidance in the face of oblivion. The act of whispering a prayer reflects a plea for understanding and connection in a moment of vulnerability.
The chorus of the song delves into the conflicting emotions of the singer regarding their fate. There is a reluctance to dwell on the past and a yearning for acceptance if the time to depart arrives. The uncertainty surrounding the future is juxtaposed with a sense of longing for reassurance and direction, exemplified by the metaphorical "light" that could illuminate the way forward in the darkness of the unknown.
The idea of balance and the enigma of infinity are explored in the lyrics, highlighting the singer's struggle to comprehend the transition between existence and what lies beyond. The ambiguity of whether crossing over will feel like awakening from a dream or simply slipping into eternal sleep underscores the profound introspection and introspection conveyed in the song. The notion of giving up and releasing control is evoked, questioning whether surrendering to the mysteries of the afterlife will bring peace or further disorientation.
The repeated refrain of "This is not my time" serves as a mantra of defiance and hope amidst the uncertainty and contemplation of mortality. It reflects a deep-seated belief in the possibility of finding equilibrium and comfort in the face of the unknown. The song's conclusion with the assertion that this moment does not belong to the singer encapsulates a sense of agency and determination in navigating the complexities of life and death. Overall, "Grey Havens" delves into profound existential themes with a mix of apprehension, longing, and resilience.

3:26 you can hear at the last part of the song when Trenton screams "then this is not my". It just shows that Trenton is not only an excellent clean vocalist, but would also make a pretty good unclean one
