Motion Sickness
Hands Like Houses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How could I miss you
If I never met you
If that road turns another way
And never looked back

There's a feeling overwhelming
Like I couldn't belong
Without this point of contact
Everything would be wrong
Stop-motion on the ceiling, skip frames
And I'm forgetting the in-between

When the world is spinning and I am standing still
When the world comes apart and I'm standing still
You flicker

If I never knew what I've lost (you flicker)
And I turn around, and you're gone (you flicker)

A moment lost is not so easily found
If our grounds turned another way
And never looked back

There's a feeling overwhelming
This is where I belong
This melody inseparable
From singing this song
I'm floating on the ceiling
Skip beats and I'm forgetting the in-between

When the world is spinning and I am standing still
When the world comes apart and I'm standing still
You flicker

If I never knew what I've lost (you flicker)
And I turn around, and you're gone (you flicker)

If you turn left and I turn right
Would the curves of the earth
Bring our paths back to cross again

Would I trust fate
To bring back the tide
Or would I dive head first
To feel you on my skin

(You flicker)

If I never knew what I've lost (you flicker)
And I turn around, and you're gone (you flicker)

When the world is spinning and I am standing still (you flicker)
When the world comes apart and I'm standing still (you flicker)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hands Like Houses' song "Motion Sickness" convey the feeling of uncertainty and loss that comes with missed connections and opportunities. The opening lines speak to the idea that sometimes we can feel a sense of longing even for people we've never met, highlighting the ways in which chance encounters and near-misses can shape our perceptions of the world around us. The chorus uses the motif of flickering light to draw parallels between the instability of relationships and the instability of perception, suggesting that even the most solid-seeming connections can be fleeting and fragile.

As the song progresses, the singer strives to reconcile these conflicting emotions, vacillating between moments of longing and moments of acceptance. The bridge highlights the tension between trust and agency, suggesting that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, we have a measure of control over our own destinies.

Hands Like Houses is one of those rare gems amongst other bands- EACH
and EVERY one of their songs is unique, has inspiring and even moving
lyrics, and all the musical work, being the drums, guitar, bass, synth,
and vocals are all completely intentional. There are no "filler" notes
or verses. It's all meaningful and I think that's what makes them so
damned amazing.

I just wish I knew how they stay this creative all the freaking time.
It's almost superhuman.

Lynn Gunn helped write this song and it totally shows. Honestly I'm disappointed that she wasn't featured for vocals. Since HLH isn't on Rise anymore we'll probably never see that collab happen. ;-;

Kevin From Sales

Probably the most underrated song I've ever heard.
