The House You Built
Hands Like Houses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You used to know so well those weathered hands,
When they were gentle, when they brought the colour to your cheeks.
They still do, but not the same, because they turned their back on you,
And when she's hiding at your feet, you know you'll stay.

These sentiments are second hand.
He's fighting for his heart but he is losing ground.
She's unintended, not unloved,
And you're the one to keep her safe and sound.

Don't look down,
Even though they're looking down on you.
The house you build on solid ground
Will be a home. In time, you'll see it.
Don't look down,
Even though they're looking down on you.
The love you build your house around
Will make it home in time to see them through.

Her shoes are scuffed, she drags her feet too much,
But baby lift your face, you don't need to justify your place.
So stay just what you are, you've come this far.
If only I could show your future you would light up like the sun.

These sentiments are second hand.
She's fighting for your future and she's gaining ground.
You are protected, you are loved,
So show them who you are and make them proud.

Don't look down,
Even though they're looking down on you.
The house you build on solid ground
Will be a home. In time, you'll see it.
Don't look down,
Because there's no-one looking down on you.
Your house is built on solid ground,
You'll be just fine in time, just see it through.

Hey little light, aren't you a big achiever?
Hey Mrs. Might, I know that you believe in her.
Hey Mr. Beaten Down, you found your heart again.
In the hope you built your house around,
You gave your little light,
You gave your little light a brand new start.

Don't look down,
Because there's no-one looking down on you.
The house you built on solid ground
Will be a home. In time, you'll see it.
Don't look down,
Because there's no-one looking down on you.

Your house is built on solid ground,
You'll be just fine in time, just see it through.

Overall Meaning

The song "The House You Built" by Hands Like Houses is a powerful message of encouragement and support for someone who is struggling and feeling looked down upon. The lyrics describe someone who used to know another person's hands so well, but they have changed and turned their back on them. However, despite this change, the person singing will stay and keep the other person safe.

The song also praises the person who is struggling, reminding them not to justify their place or change who they are. Instead, they should show everyone who they are and make them proud. The chorus repeats the phrase "Don't look down" as a reminder to keep their head up and not let the judgment of others bring them down. The song ultimately ends on a positive note, with the person's future looking bright like the sun.

The song's message is universal and can be interpreted in various ways. It could be about a friend, family member, or even oneself, struggling with self-doubt and feeling unsupported. The lyrics suggest that with time and dedication, one can build a strong foundation for a fulfilling life and, most importantly, not lose sight of themselves in the process.

I love the positivity in this song. It may not be my favourite off the album, but it's got some of the best lyrics.

This is my take on this song.  It's a story about the struggles of a couple who had an unplanned pregnancy.  The first verse is about their low point in the relationship.  The parents are fighting and the father ended up hitting the mother.  Their daughter is the only thing that keeps the two together.  In the first build, the father is depressed and possibly drowning in his sorrows.  Maybe he lost his job, but the mother has to do whatever is necessary to keep the daughter safe.  This is also where we find out that the child was unplanned, but the love for her is real.  In the first chorus, the outside world criticizes and shames them.  With all the struggles the mother and father have, it's the love of their daughter that will get them through it all.  The second verse is directed towards the daughter seeing the struggles her mother is going through to make ends meet.  The message for the daughter is to not feel ashamed of where she comes from.  Even though things look tough right now, they will get better in the future.  The second build sends the message to the daughter that her mother is doing everything she can for you, so just do the best you can in school and any extracurriculars for her.  The second chorus shows that there are still struggles, but things are starting to get better at this point.  The bridge is where things start to look better for the family.  The daughter is doing well in school.  The mother is reaching a state where she is happy again.  The father is finally out of the rut and maybe got a job somewhere which is taking stress off the mother.  All of this gives the family a chance at true happiness.  In the final chorus, the outside world no longer criticizes the family.  They have successfully fought through the struggles and are ready for a new chapter in their life filled with love and happiness.

Their best album along with their first one, I wonder if they will go back to this vibe in the future with such deep and melodic lyrics... :(
