He came from Toronto; she, from Seattle.
His parents started a radio station; hers were music teachers.
Both had music in their blood, instruments in their hands, and a mind to create.
The mountains led him to the west; a star led her to the north.
In Vancouver they met and schooled—studying music and life.
They found promise.
They found love.
In less than a year they put school on hold, got married, and lived.
With music and purpose guiding them, school called again and to Nashville they went.
He became an audio engineer; she became a songwriter; music stayed central and they continued to create.
Entering the Nashville music scene in 2009, Handsome and Gretyl released their debut EP, Hold On Tight Love, February 2011.
Handsome and Gretyl have created an earthy folk feel crossed with an imaginative jaunt of pop, a sweet and tangy piece of wild berry pie. This duo draws from real life, delivering optimistic though realistic lyrics, seasoned with the chill of snow, the sea breeze, and the hope of tomorrow’s sunrise.
Belong Here
Handsome and Gretyl Lyrics

Light is spilling on us
While the world is passing
We are everlasting
Trees start to dance
As we make straight our paths
We are all working under the sun, wanting love
We are all sleeping under the stars, feeling young
Deeper down the hollow
Serenading swallows
Time no one is keeping
And maps have lost their leading
Where we go now
Doesn't matter somehow
We are all working under the sun, wanting love
We are all sleeping under the stars, feeling young
We have nothing and everything now
And we belong here somehow
The lyrics of Handsome and Gretyl's song "Belong Here" express a sense of belonging and contentment with the present moment. The opening lines, "Wander in the forest, light is spilling on us," evoke a peaceful and serene setting. The next lines, "While the world is passing, we are everlasting," suggest that amidst the chaos and movement of life, the singer identifies with a lasting, timeless aspect of existence. As they make their way through the forest, the trees appear to dance, symbolizing a feeling of harmony and interconnectedness with nature.
As the song progresses, the lyrics emphasize that regardless of where they are going or what they are doing, it is the present moment that matters. "Deeper down the hollow, serenading swallows, time no one is keeping, and maps have lost their leading" implies a sense of letting go of the past and the future, living in the moment, and being at peace with what is. The refrain of "we are all working under the sun, wanting love, we are all sleeping under the stars, feeling young" reinforces this idea that our basic human desires for love and happiness connect us all, and that despite the passing of time and the changes in our lives, we are all still essentially the same.
The final lines of the song, "We have nothing and everything now, and we belong here somehow," capture the essence of the song's message. The singer has found a place of inner peace and belonging, realizing that they have everything they need in the present moment, and that they belong here in this world. Through these mindful lyrics, Handsome and Gretyl remind us of the beauty and power of living in the moment and being at peace with ourselves and the world around us.
